Ramblings
I look like a fat sloppy mess. I went through a bit of a minor depression due to personal issues, a ****load of stress at work, and ended up drinking myself into oblivion on a near nightly basis. I still worked out regularly, of course, and my most objective measures, I'm in good shape, but relative to what I expect of myself, I have a long way to go. I'm not terribly interested in being huge anymore, but I'd like to be lean and muscular. Starting Monday, I'm going to be dieting again, but rather than my more typical extreme approaches, it'll be the cliched bodybuilding diet you see in ads for MuscleTech and ****. Typically, I've not done well on these because I have no restraint unless the tiniest cheat means I've ruined the diet. We'll see how things play out. Part of this, of course, is that I've met up with folks from WBB for the last couple years for hte Arnold and would prefer not to look like **** and embarass myself this coming March. I haven't completed decided on the specifics of my dieting or training, but will do so tomorrow.

Rambling
After a little bit of thinking (but not that much), current plans for my diet/training are:

Diet:
200g carbs
200g protein
60g fat
Focus on *real* food, whole grains, some fruits/vegetables, along with some very basic supplementation (fish oil, whey, multi)

Training:
Monday: High-volume upper-body, 15-30 min cardio
Tuesday: High volume lower body, 15-30 min cardio
Wednesday: 30 min cardio
Thursday: Moderate rep upper-body
Friday: 30 min cardio
Saturday: Full-body low reps

I'm also really, really, really going to try and cut out drinking (which has been the primary culprit in why I look like ****) on all days except Saturday or Friday (i.e. one day a week) and limit myself to no more than 6 drinks. As a point of reference, I've been drinking regularly on Thursday, Friday, Saturday for many months. As a barometer on New Year's I drank about 6-7 mixed drinks plus an entire bottle of Dom Perignon in just under 3 hours without getting particularly ****ed up. That's a bit scary. I will post pics of my fat ass in the next day or two, I promise.

Diet
m11 scoop whey, 5g creatine
m21/2 cup oatmeal, 1 scoop whey
m3turkey burger, whole wheat bun, apple

m5turkey burger, whole wheat bun
m61 oz cashews, 2oz low-carb noodles, 1 cup marinara, 3oz tuna, 1 cup mixed greens, 2 tbsp light balsamic vinaigrette, 1 cup skim milk, ZonePerfect bar

I said on the first day of this blog that my biggest challenge would be to *not* drink. Well, yesterday I had my first challenge...and I failed. It was our company 2007 rollout. Now, we never had a holiday party. This was in place of that really. Don't ask me what ****** decided having the party in the middle of the week *after* the New Year thought that would be better than at the normal time, but someone did. So, anyway, they rented out an entire restaurant and there was an open bar. Needless to say, my willpower vanished in the face of the liqour (and subsequently the food). Within ten minutes of arriving I had had:
1 shot vodk
1 gin & tonic
1 red bull & vodka
1 Heineken

I only had about 3-4 more drinks over the subsequent 4 hours, but that was bad enough. So, needless to say yesterday was a ****ing failure. Today was not great either.

Diet
m11 cup Kashi Crunch, 1 scoop whey, 5g creatine, 1/2 cup skim milk
m2Turkey Pita sandwich, light mayo
m31 slice pizza, handful of candy
m43 eggs, 1 can peaches, 1oz cashews, 1 cup Kashi Crunch, 1 cup Rice Krispies, 1 cup skim milk.

I look fairly similar to this now, just a bit fatter and smaller. I'd like to get back to this within the next 1.5 months the improve:

Update: I drank last night. I suck. As I was walking into work this morning, I realized what a ****ty job I've been doing this week. So, next week I WILL do the following:
1) Plan and prepare all meals the night before and eat ONLY that
2) Do cardio at least 4 days of the week.
3) Absolutely no drinking during the week
4) Max 6 drinks on Friday and/or Saturday (per night)

So let it be written, so let it be done.

You still look damn solid. Don't get so down on yourself.

I find taking a month and just not drinking at all helps me. I drop bodyfat from the loss of calories, and I prove I can quit drinking for a month if I want to.

Thanks for the kind words.

I've gone extended periods without drinking. Right now it's difficult because I'm single and all I do is work...so the bar is my one decent place to meet people. Although, the girls I meet are usually not decent...so I should just skip it.

I just bought an Xbox 360 in the hopes that I can revert to my former state of nerdiness and just skip going out altogether, because then not drinking would be quite easy. I really do think my primary challenge in all of this will be the drinking. If I can just limit it to weekends and only do it midly excessively I think I'll be okay--although it'll still be far from ideal.

Ha, I don't quite remember...I think the alcohol killed those brain cells.

I don't really drink beer too much. I mostly stick to hard liquour. I have given up on sugar free Red Bull and sugar free Tonic water b/c they taste like ****. I think it's more the hormonal effects of excessive drinking that **** me up anyway, not that. Plus late night Taco Bell.

Little behind on this. Not happy with my performance last week. I went out drinking three nights (and not moderately). Friday was cool insofar as I found a $50 bill on the flooer of the bar. Plus, I did finish off strong by NOT going out on Saturday. I can't remember the last time I did that. It may have had something to do with the Xbox360 I bought on Saturday (along with Gears of War). I'm going to try and revert to a complete state of nerdiness (vs. my current partial state) and just stay in playing video games rather than drinking. At least until I get back in shape.

So, last night the project I've been working on since last March (as tech lead/team lead of software engineering), from inception to execution, finally launched. I was at work until 2am trying to fix some ****. Kinda sucked. And when I got home, I ate a bunch of stuff. Not really bad things, but my calories ended up being a bit high yesterday. 2800k or so. I didn't cheat, though.

Today there was a half page article in the Wall Street Journal and a short segment on CNBC, which you can see along with another video about the place I work:
Caffeine (my project) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3LqlzuvtMk)
ePrize (where I work) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmxH3_kK38g)

And yes I'm a shill in the corporate army of capitalism. The words of Bill Hicks echo in my ears every day I go into work:

By the way, if anyone here is in marketing or advertising...kill yourself. Thank you. Just planting seeds, planting seeds is all I'm doing. No joke here, really. Seriously, kill yourself, you have no rationalisation for what you do, you are Satan's little helpers. Kill yourself, kill yourself, kill yourself now. Now, back to the show. Seriously, I know the marketing people: 'There's gonna be a joke comin' up.' There's no ****in' joke. Suck a tail pipe, hang yourself...borrow a pistol from an NRA buddy, do something...rid the world of your evil ****in' presence.

Update:

Hmm, I have not updated this in the past couple days. Bah. I have not been drinking since last Friday. I'm going out tonight but am going to try and keep it moderate. I dunno if I'll be able to do that, though. I have been eating pretty healthy, but I think probably too much. I haven't been keeping super careful track, but generally come in at around 2300-2800kcal. I've also done cardio three days this week (I have one to do one more day before the end of the week to meet my goals). Apparently, all this is insufficient. I need to eat less and/or do more cardio since I am *not* dropping weight. If I can't get my **** squared and I feel like I'm running out of time before the Arnold, I will go back to the UD2. I'm sorta like a crack-addict that way.

I have not been keeping this up-to-date as I should. Still, I'm doing a better job than I have in quite some time. But in the past two weeks I've only been out drinking twice, neither of which times did I have more than 6-7 drinks (though usually those were consumed all within a couple hours). I've also been eating quite heathily and did not cheat significantly at all this week. I also did a fair bit of cardio. Hopefully this will start to pay off.

Great ****ing workout. Since I lost my workout book last week, I was just kinda guessing and in many cases (except leg press) this resulted in increased poundages

Way to bench press 135lbs for as many reps as drinks you've had this week. Don't hurt yourself, Mary.

Shark & galileo: stfu

Update: I've was eating well, have barely been drinking (I went out Thursday night, but only had one drink Friday (shot of 151), and nothing on Saturday. Still, I've been *gaining* weight--or at least not losing it. I've also been making decent strength gains (near to my previous PRS), so it's with some sadness I...

...return to the UD2. Seriously, I've found the perfect diet for putting on muscle slowly, but it's the suck for losing fat.

In addition to standard UD2, I'm also adding "extra" cardio on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday. This is seriously going to be the suck and I'll probably lose muscle but it's the only way to be in decent shape for the Arnold (I'm using this like some would use a contest, as motivation).

I'm also picking up some nicotine gum tonight since I'm totally out of EC for controlling my appetite and having previously used it found it
a)non addictive (for me anyway)
b)fairly helpful.

More to come later.

I can't believe you're going back to UD2 so soon. This is just like you, Susan.

Why don't you give the Xian PWN hAet Diet 2.0 a chance? It's good for a solid 2lb/week loss, which should allow you to drop about 10 before the Arnold. Plus, the workouts are more conducive to sanity.

Even as a fatty, I'm still leaner than you.

And bigger I'd wager (in more ways than one).

You've always seemed to do very well no matter what you've done. I can't recall a time I saw you dieting where you didn't make very impressive recomposition changes, be it from detraining or whatever. Until your approach has been vetted by a few more people, I'm sticking with the UD2. It's the only thing that's worked effectively for me both psychologically and physiologically, both in terms of the training regimen and the diet. I don't want to experiment with new approaches when I have only four weeks to get lean(er).

Okay, I suck at updating this. When I didn't have a full time job, I was a journal-ing maniac. But when you're working 50-60 hours a week, going to the gym twice a day, and trying to take care of everything else, it's a bit tougher. Anyway, I'm finally starting to look decent. Not spectacular, but I don't think I'll be embarrassing myself at the Arnold. I don't know that I'll impress either. I think I'm not too far off from the "good" pictures I posted. I don't feel like posting pictures, though, since people will see me next Friday anyway (at which point I think I'll be another 1-2 lbs of fat down). I'm sitting at about 207 carbed up. 201 depleted. I'm fairly okay with how I look. I've been much better about the drinking (although, 1-2 nights a week I do drink), almost perfect on the diet days, and so-so on the carb-up and maintenance days of the UD2. I've also been doing an excessive amount of cardio, which seems to be helping. In the past two weeks, i've dropped about 4-5 pounds, which is just about where I want to be.

After the Arnold, I plan on continuing dieting till I'm about 190 depleted, so perhaps another 4-5 weeks. I may take a one week hiatus and simply do a full 6 weeks, instead.

Diet
M1: 1/2 cup oatmeal, 1 scoop whey
M2: Preworkout shake (1/2 scoop whey, 1 scoop dextrose, 1 tsp creatine)
M3: During workout drink (1 Powerade)
M4: Postworkout shake (2 scoops whey, 1 scoop dextrose, 1 tsp creatine)
M5: BW3s (Chicken Buffalitos, Chips)
M6: Box of Junior Mints
M7: McDonald's (Grilled Chicken Sandwich, no mayo, cheeseburger)
M8: To come (Heavy drinking)

Comments:
Not terrible, but not great. The cheeseburger was so I'd have some fat in me for the drinking that has already commenced. A little high on fat according to UD2 instructions, but I'm not terribly concerned.

No, I just said I'd cut down, which I have. I never intended to give up the occasional binge. Honestly, I've been pretty good on that front, though.

And my workout was actually probably more like and hour and 30-40 min. I screwed up on the times up there. I'm too lazy to fix it, though.

23 drinks? You've outclassed me sir. That means you either had a really good Valentine's Day or an monumentally ****ty one. I probably won't go above 10-12 drinks tonight.

Ha. I'm not much of a beer fan either. It's hard liquor that does me in.

Thanks for the compliment. Personally, I would say I'm only slightly above average for someone who regularly goes to the gym, although my legs are a fair bit bigger than average. In overall looks, though, I put most men to shame. Ha. I didn't get the name 'The Hotness' at my workplace for nothing (never mind the fact I was the one that coined it). One of my coworkers even put up a site:

Yes, the UD2 is like crack to me. As poor a job as I do on the UD2, I do even more poorly on other diets (I have problems adhering).

This is a pseudo-update since I don't feel like making a full-fledged entry. I was very happy (ecstatic?) about my progress last week. Then, I flushed it all down the toilet. The first part of the week = perfect. Then:
Thursday: drinking
Friday: I ate a bunch of cookies and other **** during my refeed (bad!)
Saturday: drinking again
Sunday: My meals consisted of donuts (I was ordered to go into work and had nothing else to eat) and sushi. Then I topped it off with some Ho-hos and Twinkies. Zac = teh suck

Suffice it to say, I did not do a great job on the non-dieting days. To be honest, it wasn't *quite* as bad as the above makes things appear. Still all those decisions did not help me in attaining my goals. Monday morning I was 209, which was up (I think?) from the previous Monday. Right now I'm sitting at 203. We'll see where I end up just prior to my tension workout on Thursday. If it's 200 or below (which would be down a lb), I'll be happy. More and I'll be quite pissed with myself.

Diet
M1: 1 scoop whey
M2: 1 cup egg beaters
M3: 1 packet tuna
M4: 2 scoops whey
M5: Wendy's Grilled Chicken + 1/4 of a bun
M6: 3 eggs + 1/4 cup rice krispies

Supplements: nicotine gum, caffeine

Comments:
They brought a bunch of donuts and paczkis into work for Fat Tueday. I ate a couple donut holes. I hate my coworkers. Yes, I know I eat a few more carbs than ideally one should. I was still probably no higher than 50g of carbs for the day. I'm not doing a goddamn PSMF anyway.

Training:

Session 1: 7:30am - 8:30am (Extra depletion workout + 24 min cardio)
Session 2: 8:15pm - 9:00pm (40 min cardio + minor extra depletion work)

Comments
First session involved an "extra" depletion workout (I've been doing the full depletion all on Monday by doing legs in the morning and upper body in the evening) and 24 minutes of cardio. Evening was 40 minutes of cardio plus a tiny amount of further depletion work.

Perhaps it's egotistical, but I honestly think I could stun some people on here with what I could do in pretty short order.
