I don't think anyone truly gets rid of their M:tG cards. I plan on keeping mine for at least 5-10 more years so I can display them in some online museum somewhere. :ninja:

I purged my home of all collectibles a few years ago and have since resisted the urge to amass new stacks of useless crap. But in the past, I have collected:
beer bottle caps/labels
football cards
hockey cards
M:tG (paid for a few semesters of school when I sold my Unlimited stash)
heroclix
a zillion other minor CCGs from SW:CCG to ST:CCG to Rage to you name it
Protein tubs (had a collection of several dozen at one point; I was thinking of making a raft or something)
stamps
coins

The problem with mtg cards is the day the game becomes unpopular, the cards are worth absolutely nothing. These type of cards are probably the riskiest investment as far as collectible cards.

Tofer, here are two cards that are worth money and are Standard (Type II) legal:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/123/378246992_1447ff7f0a_o.jpg
These are worth about $10 to $15 depending on whether you play regular paper Magic or online Magic. They're the new dual lands from the Ravnica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ravnica:_City_of_Guilds) card set.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/184/378246993_e83a3878f9_o.jpg
This is the "timeshifted" Wrath of God from the Planar Chaos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planar_Chaos) card set.
Wraths typically sell for $12 (online Magic) to $10-$15 (paper Magic). I imagine a Damnation will sell for nearly the same amount of money.

Sweet cards. I quit playing right about the time 4th edition came out. I was mostly type 1. My favorite tournaments were ones where each person would get a certain number of unopened packs, and you had to make a deck out of them. We'd come up with all kinds of sweet tournies at my local place.

I toyed with the idea of chucking them a few months ago. I think I need to price these babies out... :oSame here man. I was a big dork in high school. I haven't played since about 1996 so most of my cards are old Legends, Dark, and original edition cards. I didn't even know people still played and that they were coming out with new stuff still till I saw a mag in the bookstore last week that had price lists. Seems prices haven't changed much in 10 years so I should just sell the damn things.

My wife and I have been collecting matchbooks for about 25 years. We have them from all over the US and world. Ironically, with all the anti-smoking nonsense, most bars and restaurants don't have them anymore.
So we've switched to shot glasses and shooters. God, I hope they don't outlaw booze again.
Wish: I wish I had saved my concert tickets. I'd have 100's (1,000's?) from many historic concerts. Would have made a great scrapbook, with great memories.
We keep the matchbooks in a giant container in the living room. We could have a great bonfire if we wanted to.

bitches and bad habits....lol
well for a while my last two years in college i collected new bottles of liquor, when ever i tried something new i just saved the bottle and placed it on our mantel, it got pretty impressive and was really only a fraction of what i drank.
also for a while i collected skoal can, id just never throw them away just into an unused dresser drawer, and when i moved out in december there was well over 100 empty cans in there, pretty sad yet somewhat impressive
but as far as anything useful or some serious value, not really

GOD I miss M:tg, I really do... I had the type I power 9, full dual land set and all the "big" cards like the library of alexandria, 4 x dujzam djinns (sp? ) etc... I stopped playing when I realized they were going to release and expansion every 6 months and that I had no one to play type 1 with... :-( I stopped collecting around the plainshift timeframe, so I sold everything cheap to buy my wife her wedding ring. I do regret selling them, and wish I was still playing... and yes, my wife would still have gotten her ring...
Even today I miss it... :-( My wife hated it and told me to grow up multiple times... :-)
Today I collect casino chips...
