Hey all
About 2 weeks ago i was in a serious car accident. There was nothing much left of either vehicle, and i dont remember very much.
Alot of compression fractures, displaced bones, dislocations and alot of bruises and swelling.
I spent 5.5 days in hospital and had major surgery on my left foot. I dont even wanna get into the details there, but i have 8 pins holding my foot together, 3 screws and a whole lotta stitches, a cast on my other leg, etc.
I cant wait to get back to the gym, omfg, i'm going crazy laying in bed at home.
Hopefully i wont loose too much size.
Anyone else been in this boat?

Never been in *that* boat and no offense but I hope I never have to be in it.
I hope all goes well and there's not much permanent damage once you heal up. If you ever get anxious to get back into the gym all you gotta do is pop another vic. Enjoy that **** while you can.

Good luck on the recovery man.
I would say. Keep your diet in close order for two major reasons.
1) To help keep whatever physique you have. Eating too much while laying around will get you fat and eating to little protein/calories will get all your muscle lost in a matter of weeks.
2) Having a good diet will def. help ALOT with recovery. You'll heal up alot faster if you're getting the right stuff in ya.
So take it easy. Try to look at it as a positive. You're going to be able to walk/lift again. Look at this as a break from life. You get to relax all day, eat and sleep. Umm. Just be creative when you get bored....playing board games with family members, watching TV, movies, reading a book, watching star trek re-runs...etc. If all else fails. Sleep. Nothing wrong with doing that when you've just got out of that accident.
But seriously bro. Get better soon, TAKE IT EASY and eat yourself to recovery.
Good luck on the recovery man.

I hate to say it, but if you're lying down for longer than about a week or two (i.e. not moving), there's no way you're going to keep any muscle, whatsoever. It atrophies at an astounding rate. If you can get up and move around a bit, it'll definitely help.

He knows what he is talking about. A proper diet will help you speed up your recovery and prevent loss of LBM. And don't jump into heavy lifting again too soon, wait untill you are healed to continue with your routine. Nothing would suck more than getting out of a car accident and a few weeks later injuring something again while trying to resume heavy lifting....

roddy man i hope you have a quick recovery. that sucks about the car crash and the injuries. just take er easy, watch the superbowl, if you can sit near a window then you could at least watch whats going on outside. rent lots of movies and make sure you dont rush back into lifting unless you feel 100%. do you have any upper body injuries? mabye you could do some light benching??or pushups if it doesnt hurt? (obviously not right now, but in the near future??)

It comes back so fast though, it's insane (muscle memory).

Sorry to hear about that bud. Sounds like it could have been much worse than it was. It'll feel like a long time, but just go easy.
Maybe get some grippers and get strong enough to crush an apple...

Anthony went through something similar not that long ago.
You seem to have a good attitude about things. Heal up quick!

I had knee reconstruction in early june and i just got back up to my presurgery squat last week. Working hard on deads now.
concentrate on getting your body healed so when it is time, you are ready to hit the gym again. Dont go to fast and risk compounding injuries though

That depends on the person. I was just trying to give him some hope.
Plus, he would lose the muscle faster or more of it if he ate little to no protein then if he kept his intake high.

You don't lose muscle that easily so long as your diets in order.
I quit football once for about a year and a half and did NOTHING. NO lifting no exercise and pretty much after school just sat around all day playing video games.
Went back to the football program and was still the biggest/strongest kid after 18 months of doing ZERO.
Two months wont do anything you can't redo in just as much time, keep that diet in check and keep your head up.

I don't know about how long it takes to lose muscle but two weeks is nothing. Whenever I take breaks from lifting it's for 2-3 weeks. My first week back is a bitch but by the second week I'm back to normal.

srt4?
Nope, 97' f-150, reg cab short box.
... i have heard horror stories of massive foot injuries from accidents in SRT-4's and Neons tho, if that was the connection you were trying to make.
I think i'm gonna start doing some very light dumbell lifting starting next week, while sitting in a chair. Series of hammer curls, front and side lateral raises, shoulder press, forearm curls....anything that will tide me over :) and keep my muslces grinning

holy **** i'm bored
Sorry to hear about the accident dude...
GL with the recovery.
I've never had anything close... but I did have to lay in bed for 2 straight weeks b/c of a back injury... boredom was the worst. And we didn't have cable when I was growing up, only 3 channels.. so not much TV. So it was reading, eating and I learned how to meditate. That helped me for the rest of my life.
Our thoughts are with ya Roddy...

thanks guys i appreciate all of the kind words. Your replies help me to think a little straighter.
I just found out todaay that my employer is going to lay me off so i can collect medical unemployment. I'm not too thrilled about loosing my job over all of this, and it looks like i will have to cancel school and return in september.
Its a huge throwback for me. But i've learned before in life that you cant hurry through life, you get your set backs, and how you deal with them determines where you will get in life.
I just found out its actually 3 months recovery for all i have been through. I have another surgery in about 3 weeks.
I just hope i will be mobile enough to spend most of the day with my girlfriend on her birthday in about 2 weeks time.
:D
