Havent been in here yet. Your lifts are amazing man. I like the low volume training. Have you always been training in that rep range?

Killa Kurt
02-26-2007, 05:56 PM
When I first started I was doing 10 - 12 rep range. Eventually got down to 8 rep range, but for about 75% of my career yes low volume training. It's been working great for me, and my other partners, he started his journal on here also http://www.wannabebigforums.com/showthread.php?t=92955 2 other partners will be posting soon.

I'm pretty sure I have your shoulder genetics (especially looking at the sideways pic), it's been hard for me to get a significant width in my shoulders and they dont look "lifted" they kinda look like they slant down and get easly overpowered by my arms.

I always thought that was because my military press was kinda low, but now that its not pathetic anymore my shoulders grew but they still kinda look the same.

Have you had any luck doing lateral raises or anything else for that matter to widen your shoulders?

Great lifts by the way man.

That's my standing T-Bar row. The other one is the same concept except it never hits the ground, and your in a slight incline position, laying a little higher than parallel with the ground, wider grip also.

Yes that's the split, I make sure I get my rest, and take in ridiculous amounts of protein and calories so I will have "gas" in my tank, all our workouts are pretty intense.

solid sounds good. do you think i would overtrain on a split like this?

day 1: push: bench, military, weighted dips (i mix it up with rack presses sometimes)
day 2: pull: bb curls, weighted chins, standing t-bar
day 3: legs: squats, deads (i mix it up with rack pulls sometimes)
day 4: off
repeat

everything is heavy 2-4 reps and 4-6 working sets. every session is 60 min. or less with about 15 min. of abs and high intensity cardio at the end. i take in about 300g protein everyday and eat ****loads of rolled oats. i'm 6'4 and 210 lbs. and i'm trying to get as strong and big as my frame will let me without becoming an ogre, like 250ish lean. i'm 19 years old.

or should i train less, something like:

day 1: push
day 2: pull
day 3: off
day 4: legs
day 5: off
repeat

Just a few questions before I answer yes or no. Why 15 minutes of abs first of all if your trying to be a big strong ogre? Second, how have you been training previously to this proposed split? And third, what supplements are you taking?

I'll try my best to answer your questions:
1. It's 4 sets of core ab work, either incline abs with a weight behind my head or something my friends call soviets--you load up one end of a barbell with weights and put the other end in a corner, you hold up the barbell by the end where the weights are, arms extended about chest height, and you twist your torso slowly bringing the weight to the left side of your body, then the right side, flexing your abs, etc. Then i do four 30 sec. sprints with 1 min. jogs in between either on a rowing machine or outside. Both abs and cardio take me 15 min. total. I do it because I want to minimize fat gain because i eat A LOT and, more importantly, I've read a lot of articles saying that sprinting helps release growth hormone. Do you think i should cut this out altogether and use the 15 min. to lift more (or add additional sets to each exercise im doing, or take longer rest breaks)?

2. I started training in Fall 2005 at 6'3 and a whooping 135 lbs. aha. So since then I've put on 70+ lbs. by eating a ****load and lifting consistently. My splits always change. Sometimes I do fullbody, sometimes a do a 5-day split like teamstocky's. This push, pull, leg thing is new. I've been doing it for like a week and a half.

3. Supplements: ON 100% Whey, ON 100% Casein, BCAA's, Multivitamin, Vitamin C, Fishoil. I eat 6 big meals a day. My last two meals of the day are only protein and fat. Everything else is protein and carbs. I don't calorie count but I can tell I'm eating enough because my weight is going up and I have a 14-18% BF based on my roommate's ****ty bodyfat scale.

Hope this helps and thanks in advance.

Personally I would add more compound exercises to your routine rathern than doing 15 minutes of cardio and abs, BUT I understand you don't want to look like a fat slob, I think you could definately take on that split, I think either one will show results. 6 Days a week lifting might burn you out pretty fast if your lifting heavy though, that could be a short term bump. It seems like your very dedicated, so I don't need to stress the importance of eating a lot and getting a lot of rest. Everytime someone decides to start lifting heavy I get excited, I'll be keeping an eye out on you.

Nice squat. Did the spotter just grab the third rep or did you ask for help? It looked like you might have made it through the sticking point. Either way good form from what I can see.

I asked for help before I went down for the rep, I wasn't going to get it up.

killa kurt i thought about the cardio ab thing and i think just limiting it to twice a week (instead of after every session) is a better idea. so i'm going to remove abs and cardio from push and pull days and only do it on leg days...after squats and deadlifts. this will give me 15-20 min. more time to focus on benching, military, weighted dips, rack lock-outs on push days and same thing for pull days. or if anything it will let me take longer breaks between sets. whatcha think?

Yes we do them on back day. Although they say the muscle that are worked with squats/deads are hand in hand, I still think it will work out fot you, I have a feeling it's going to be pretty intense. You're going to need alot of discipline and dedication, so that you get enough calories, protein, and rest everyday.....

Edit: Listen to your body, you know when you need a day off and/or need to implement a day off inbetween. We tried to put co-operating muscle as far apart as we could in a 5 day split.

1. im using too much weight
2. my upper body isnt bentover enough and its too upright
3. I do my push day with bench and military the day before my pull day so my shoulders are still recovering
what do you think? or is this normal and i need to suck it up?

For some reason I think the more weight I use it forces my form to get better, I know that sounds kind of stupid but I think its true for me, and my friend also. Maybe it's because it was my last set and I was really just getting into it.....that and the fact the my friend fell trying to get the clean totally amped all of my sets up for the rest of the day after that. :hello:

WHOA you eat A LOT and still are hella lean but I guess that's what to expect when you have a LBM of almost 200 lbs. I have the best energy in the gym when I eat every 3 hours and get at least 3 meals in before lifting (i try to get 50 g protein either from whey or meat with every meal) and this seems to be similar to what you do. are weight gainer shakes those things with 500+ calories per serving and a ****load of protein and carbs? what company/brand do you use? those seem convenient because i am so busy here with class and stuff that i don't always have time to make food or go to dining hall.

Weight gainer has upwards of 600+ calories....50g protein 88 g carbs....Protein I use optimum nutrition, and the carb powder I add to that is Cyto Carb II.. ::WARNING:: Only use weight gainer if your trying to become a powerful stocky ogre.

word this goes along the same principle as the maltodextrin & dextrose & whey post-workout shake right? i looked up cytocarb and i'm not sure what it's made out of but i'm assuming maltodextrin or something similar. do you take it first thing in the morning because its convenient or do you think there are advantages to liquid food like your body absorbing it faster? do you ever consider drinking whey or bcaa's during your workouts? i read a lot of stuff about that

Well on bench I start with 135 after some normal stretching rep it about 15 times, then I'll go to 225 and rep it about 8 times, then I'll go to 315 and rep it 3-5 times, then after that I go into my previous max (if it's my max week, I max every other week) or I go into my sets. I guess it's ditto for other lifts also.

So today I went to a powerlifting competition down in Atlantic City, NJ. It was quite long, at least 6 hours...but I guess it was pretty interesting. Most of the people who were moving serious weight were using suits (which I think is the same thing as having a hydralic lift under the barbell for you) so I wasn't as hyped as I thought I was going to be. A couple of guys got my adrenaline going on the deadlifts, doing over 600, think the top 3 guys got low 600's 666 then 681, I forget what weight they were. Most of the "big" guys weren't really that impressive either I didn't think, actually I wasn't really impressed at all. There was a short stocky asian guy there who was moving serious weight for his size, he influenced my life a little bit. The ref was pretty strict with the form, sometimes when the lifts were not good I didn't understand why (we didn't catch the rules at 9 am). Sadly me and scott found out that we could have competed in this competition (which we would have done), after being under the impression that you had to place top 5 in a previous competition to enter. The suits were a total turnoff to me watching them walk around like mummys, and know that the suits could add a decent amount of weight to each lift (being generous saying a "decent" amount). Maybe I should have made this a seperate post.

your upper body strength is crazy man... Your lower body isn't bad either.

Those militaries are insane. How far do you like to bring them down to effectively work your shoulders? I used to take them to my chest, but now I go just below chin level.

Down to the chest, I do C&P's also, so I like to work on the same ROM. Yeah I'm working hard on bringing my lower body up to par, squats are coming along very nicely for me, and deads are now also.

So what you're trying to say is that they should replace the WBB logo in the top left with a pic of you military pressing?

So I've decided to set some goals for the end of summer to re-enforce a true WANNABEBIG (not wannabecutandlittle) member.

Bench 500 lbs.
Deadlift 600 lbs.
Squat 500 lbs.
Clean & Press 315 lbs.
Military Press 315 lbs x 3
Get to 230+ lbs. (I'm going to have to work for this one considering my metabolism)
