I haven't posted in awhile, not really sure what the rules are regarding this type of stuff. If I'm in the wrong here, my apologies, just delete it.

I found this to be really helpful, and Tommy Kono is one of my heroes.

That was pretty insightful. The only thing I didn't get is when he started to talk about power cleaning and squat cleaning. What's the difference? What is better? Is power cleaning the term for not shrugging but rather using the power of the arms to get the weight up? Is squat cleaning using the shrug and then dipping under the bar? Please clear this up for me.

You're right Tommy Kono is an American hero - this clip gives his very helpful and rare insight into the snatch.

When Tommy Kono talked about the power-clean vs the squat clean, he means a power clean which is starting out in the deadlift motion of bringing the weight up from the floor, then shrugging and thrusting with the legs once the bar clears the knees to bring it to your shoulders. The squat clean which is a component of the Olympic Clean and Jerk involves dropping into a squat immediately following the shrug so that the body quickly dips under the bar while it is still following its upward motion, catching it on the shoulders while rotating the elbows upward and then rising to the standing position from which the next part of the lift, the jerk, begins.
