Kiaran I love Tate Preses because the way I do them really simulates the final lockout of a bench press which, for me, is bacially teaching me to hyperextend my elbows.

No I haven't checked out any of the vids. One day when I'm not so cheap, I might purchase them.

TommyBoy
03-27-2007, 11:53 AM
Lats and speed. You gotta have a solid upper back to control the weight and if you don't have any speed, the bar will not move.

I feel it benefits me as much as everything else. I always rotate a different ME exercise each week so my CNS gets completely f**ked. They're good because they simulate using a bench shirt. Also they teach you to focus on speed.

Damn dude. You look like a piece of iron.

what a badass, haha.

from your experience, what could i expect after learning how to use a squat suit and knee wraps? 50 lbs? i dont plan on switching over to wide, i rather use medium stance below parallel, i feel more badass buring haha.

TommyBoy
03-29-2007, 06:18 PM
Stump, suits and shirts will not guarantee you a specific number. This is what I've been trying to tell people on this board. If you put on a squat suit, you can't expect 50lbs right away. Tighter equipment throws off your normal form, it requires you to learn a specific groove, and in which parts of the movement to slow down, and which to eccelerate. For example, the bench press is no longer a movement which requires tremendous chest strength. In fact, my chest is pretty weak compared to the rest of my body, but because I learned specific techniques in my bench shirt, I'm slowly beginning to bench more. So if you're looking for an answer on how many pounds you'll get out of your gear, keep looking.

Stumprrp
03-29-2007, 06:20 PM
i understand tommy im just really curious, that also worries me about bench shirts, i dont want my raw to go to crap and my chest start to deplete, lol.

TommyBoy

that also worries me about bench shirts, i dont want my raw to go to crap and my chest start to deplete, lol.
Jesus Christ Stump! Are you a powerlifter or a bodybuilder?????? All I meant was my chest strength isn't great, but I still have muscles on my chest. Oh man...you gotta stop thinking like a bodybuilder

Stumprrp
03-29-2007, 06:29 PM
im not thinking like a bodybuilder bro, i like to be big and strong, lol, not ripped and veiny, BIGGG, BULKED!

personally i cant see why u wouldnt benefit with size while lifting with gear, the muscles are being crushed with alot more weight!

from a powerlifting POV, where does the shirt pretty much cut off after it gives u the explosion at the bottom, sort of at a 3-4 board position? or if your speed is great enough there is no sticking point?

TommyBoy
03-29-2007, 06:41 PM
from a powerlifting POV, where does the shirt pretty much cut off after it gives u the explosion at the bottom, sort of at a 3-4 board position?
No a lot lower actually. It depends entirely on your stroke. I'd guess at roughly the 2 board level. This is why you don't see people training their 1 board; there's no point because that's where the shirt is supposed to work.

or if your speed is great enough there is no sticking point?
No, everyone has a sticking point. The universal sticking point is where you begin to flare your elbows.

Stumprrp
03-29-2007, 06:42 PM
oh man, wow, i can see how its all coming together now. i know everyone has a sticking point i just see these cats with shirts blasting up like 700 pounds. i stick at about a 2 board myself.

i want to bench bad now, lol, heavy board presses or something, damnit!

Yeah I ask myself that very same question. The tension was unreal. I had several dumbells and plates holding down the bands. Floor press lockouts are great. They don't allow any leg drive so they teach you to use your triceps.

Yeah overall really clean, but I add in crap from time to time. Like yesterday, City council had a meeting in the board room and they didn't finish their muffins. So I had about 6 leftover muffins for my coffee break.

Well, the last portion of the bench press is all triceps. Also, I use a narrow grip on these, which targets the triceps even more.

As for the muffin comment....I think HB is going through muffin withdrawl. Everyone needs a muffin every now and then.

TommyBoy
04-09-2007, 03:32 PM
Oh yeah 5boards was mostely tri's so not much pain there. Basically my left shoulder suffered some partial nerve damage a few months back, so it basically needs to heal on its own. There's absolutely no time frame as to how long it will take to heal. My doctor recommended giving up powerlifting for good, and then I recommended that he give up being a doctor for good. So all in all, I'm just gonna have to live with the fact that my bench is gonna be extremely sub-par for the rest of my life. That's ok with me, as long as I can squat and deadlift!

Big o Boy
04-09-2007, 04:05 PM
lol @ your recommendation to give up being a doctor for good... That's what a few of the medics have told me also. I'm like, "it's a huge part of my life, I can't just quit!" Even though I'm not as far a long as you are, I love it, and wouldn't give it up over an injury.

Yeah the only thing that will make me quit is if I die. Passing out is fun. The hard part is remembering if I got the lift or not...but my training partner informed me about the lift as he stepped over me. And it's always balls to the wall!!!

How'd the shoulder hold up squatting?

TommyBoy
04-10-2007, 09:44 PM
It started to hurt a bit, and then it just went numb. It also helps that I put a 1/4 bottle of blue heat on before hand. I really don't give 2 sh*** about my bench, as long as my squat is going good, i'm happy.

TommyBoy
04-12-2007, 09:24 PM
Well, Shoulder is feeling a little sore, numbness comes and goes. Also, after doing the squats on tuesday I noticed it put a lot of pressure on my face, and I woke up wednesday to severe pain and numbness on the left side of my face under my eye and around the cheek. Turns out that I burst a whole bunch of blood vessels in my face. Also, I gotta work a s**tload of overtime this weekend, so I'm gonna skip my next 2 workouts then do some benching on monday. It's messed up, the left side of my face is all swollen and red....looks like someone knocked me out pretty good. So this will give me an opportunity to eat lots of food and earn some extra $$$.

TommyBoy
04-19-2007, 09:31 PM
I've come to the realization that I can't rely on the shirt so much for my benching, as my shoulder routinely gives out. So I'm trying to do a lot more assistance work in order to make sure 100% of my body is strong enough. Kaz presses are pretty much the only thing that actually help strengthen my triceps. They're good because you can give 'er with loads of weight then if you fail just hook the bar in the stupid smith machine rack.

<some dude> "I just gotta say man....that's the coolest fu***n' thing I've seen in my life!"
<me> "I know. Now would you f*** off, I'm doing a set."

Saturday night, @ the club. My girlfriend goes off to get 3 drinks (1 for her, 2 for me). Some smokin' hot girl starts groovin' in my direction; she then approaches me:
<smokin' hot girl> "Hi." she then begins to rub my arm"Wow, what is this horseshoe shaped thing?"
<me> "That's my tricep muscle, baby."
<smokin' hot girl> "It's really hard."
<me> "I know....now would you f*** off, I'm trying to own the dancefloor!"
she then storms off in disgust, and my girl returns with my 2 double gin n' juices

Ah good times...

Quote of the day:
I was doing 1 Arm DB Rows, very very easy. I was just finishing a set when some skinny bastard approaches me:
<skinny bastard> "Yo, what can I do to build up my forearms?"
<me> "Just jerk off twice a day and you should be good. Oh, make sure you switch hit too."
skinny bastard looks at me puzzled. I walk away.

Thanks HB. To be honest, the Rack Pulls and Shrugs were really easy. I brought my suit with me, and I forgot my chalk. I was too lazy to put the suit on and I didn't need any chalk. Actually, the entire workout was easy. It was one of those days where everything was effortless, and it just felt light.

Not bad for no chalk. Tell me you didn't double over hand it.

My guess is the skinny bastard had a huge right forearm didn't he?

Actually I double-overhanded up to 405, switchd to over-under for 495. Skinny bastard definitely had a big right forearm.

Thanks Sid. Actually, those were quite easy too. 125 is the heaviest dumbell in the gym....pathetic, I know. This is why I use 3 different grips, too make it a little bit more challenging.

Yeah, unfortunately I'm probably gonna have to bump it up to sets of 10. I hate doing sets of 10 because I have to count so high....I'm lifting weights, not doing math homework...why should I have to count so damn high. Maybe I'll just do 5 sets..I dunno, haven't figured it out yet.

OK, here's the scoop. There's been a lot of this going on lately, especially on this forum. I thought I might as well share this with you guys. I've been doing a lot of thinking lately (also a lot of drinking....which leads to lot's of thinking). Powerlifting is great. I love it. But......it got me thinking. Why do I do it? Simple....because I wanna be as strong as possible. However, several things have come to light. 1) the devastating shoulder injury I suffered. I know it sounds like my pressing strength is good, but it's almost like I'm starting from scratch. I'm really struggling. Nerve damage is a bitch, because you have no clue when it's gonna heal, and if it's ever gonna be the same. 2) the problems in powerlifting. The inconsistant judging, the gear getting out of control, and the politics....it just doesn't need to be happening. 3) Fun. I always said to myself, I'll keep competing until it stops being fun. Well, I quit lifting in the IPF because it just wasn't fun, and hearing about everything else that's been going on in the world of powerlifting, makes me lose interest. Then I have these thoughts deep down inside me, what about returning to track and field? I've never mentioned it before, but my true love will always be track and field. I competed in shot put, discus and hammer throwing for a number of years, but then some how lost interest; time constraints, work, school, boozing, girls and the list goes on. I wasn't focused on the right things. I had a love for something....a true passion for throwing, and I gave up. Luckily, powerlifting filled that void. But now....I'm getting my hunger back. I'm ready to return to my true love, throwing. And I'm setting my goals high. It's interesting that I'm writing this....it's somewhat related to what Travis Mash wrote in an earlier post. I feel like I was put on this earth to do something....and that something is throwing. I honestly have an urge to throw some heavy ****!!! I'm setting my sights high....very high. I have 1 goal in mind: to compete in the 2012 olympics. It's as simple as that....and I won't settle for anything less. I'd just like to send out a big thank you, not only to Travis Mash for his inspirational words, but for everyone else on this forum; whether you gave me encouragement, gave me ****, helped me with my rehab, told me to **** off, or just took a glance at my training log...I appreciate everything you guys have said or done to me. And I mean it.

Project 2012 begins today. Thanks for listening......Now **** off and lift some damn weights!!!!

Wow, that's awesome! Shot is definitely my favorite....well....at 6'0" and 330lbs....it has to be my favorite. I'm not looking forward to power cleans, because............I suck at them. But I have some tricks up my sleeve to help get them stronger. I've been away from throwing for about 6 years now. Seems like forever. I also did the heavy events @ the highland games.

As for shot, I was throwing I think 15 metres last I can remember. I was not even close to this strong, when I was throwing. All I remember was throwing got me in really good shape. I remember I was 285lbs and ran 40m in 5.1 seconds. Not bad for a fatass.

You got any tips on a possible training split? Which exercises would be good to do...I need all the help I can get.

so will you just train for shot or all three? what no jav???? lol j/k

as far as training split i usually do a 4 day a week split two upper day two lower days with lots of cleans, snatches, push presses, clean pulls, snatch pulls, progressive cleans- squats of course, bench, incline and tricep exercises for shot

lots of core work- hurdles, jumping, sprinting, stadiums

I'll be training shot and discus. I hate hammer, and I can only throw a javelin like 10 feet. Ok, I seem to be on track with my split, although my shoulder will limit things like snatches and push presses.

i'm about to hit the 300 mark myself.
And may I be the first person to congratulate you on this feat! SHW's are awesome. Watch, you'll instantly get more respect from people.

Tuesday May 1/07 - Legs

Olympic Squats (really f****n' deep, belt only)
135x5
185x3
225x3
275x3
315x3x3sets

Leg Extensions
Stack for 3 sets of 8

Leg Curls
120x8x3sets

Bench Press Machine Calf Raises
Stack for 3 sets of 10

Holy ****, those squats were rough. I've never squatted that deep before, wearing the OL shoes really allowed me to get low. Fairly explosive on the way up. Definitely needs work though. I was supposed to do standing calf raises, but these 2 shemale bodybuilders were taking their sweet time on the machine...they kept yapping about glycogen or egg whites or something. I just gave up and used the bench press machine. Worked well enough.

Quote of the day:
I was in the men's change room getting changed when some dude, Russian I think, sat down, mixed his drink and started talking:
<some russian dude> "I heard creatine is good after work-out"
<me> "Yeah, but a double meat pizza sub will do the same thing"
I then took off my sweaty shirt and went to change into a clean one
<some russian dude> "Whoa...you have big muscles"
<me> "Ok bro, if you keep staring any longer, I'm gonna have to start charging you."
The russian dude looked perplexed, finished his drink and left.

Yeah, they're pretty awkward, but I'll get used to em.

What kind of split are you going to be following now? I have no idea how one trains for stuff like what you have in mind.
Me neither! Here's a sample of what I plan on doing:

Monday - Shoulders/Triceps

Grappler
Std. Incline Press
Front Raise
Side Raise
Rear Delts
Some type of tricep press

Tuesday - Legs

Alternate Oly Squat with Box Squats
Leg Ext
Leg Curls
Calves

Thursday - Chest/Biceps

Bench
Close grip
Hammer Curls
Concentration curls
Abs

Saturday - Hell

Power Cleans
Snatch grip High Pulls
Chins
Cable Rows

I'm also gonna pick a day, not sure when, and do Box jumps, hill sprints, and normal sprints. Gotta slowly ease into it, because it's like I'm learning a foreign language right now. All I know, is the bands and chains will make an appearance, and the lifting will get heavy. Just because I'm not competing in powerlifting, doesn't mean I won't be lifting heavy.
