I'm writing this from a curiosity standpoint, as I've never used steroids and never will, as I'm powerlifting rather than bodybuilding and would rather not from a personal point of view, as to me it takes some of the fun out of it. However, I'm not against steroid use (in fact I'm for it really), but I am interested in how they actually work.
I've read a few things over the years and from what I've learned noone really knows how they work or exactly what they do. Is this still the case, and does anyone know what the effects are exactly?

There should be some information in the sticky threads at the top of this forum.

Or alternatively you could get a text book or good internet site and read up about the effects of testosterone. Most steroids are testosterone or are based on the testosterone molecule.

The basic was they work is that the testosterone increases protein synthesis - combined with working out and eating lots creates more muscle.

Steroids use actually increases protein synthesis and promotes growth of satellite cells as opposed to filling in microscopic tears over a long period of time to cause growth at an accelerated rate.
