Bearwolf and I are having a contest. The loser has to wear a leotard, do a crossfit WoD, and youtube it. You're welcome to participate and risk nothing at all.

Here are the events (contest will be determined by winning 2 of 3 events):

*Jump Rope (doubles): Max number of consecutive double jumps.

*Standing Barbell Overhead Press: One-rep maximum, to be walked out of the rack, pressed from at least below the ear lobes to lockout overhead. Winner will be determined by % of bodyweight.

*Pistols (one-legged squats): Using your best leg, perform as many repetitions to at least parallel without setting down your suspended leg. Here is an example:

I should be able to join in this one ... shoulder is getting to the point where oh squats are at least feasible. ;)

Strict press or push press?

Alright. The jump rope eliminates me already. I think I can do like one regular jump.

For practice do the pistols on a box. It lets you drop your other leg bellow the ground. We started doing these with weight overhead like a snatch. One leg snatch squat anyone?

faithless

gotta try those one legged squats sometimes. They look very tough.

Ok, I got the overhead press and pistols down. But what are the double jumps? Is it where the rope goes under your feet twice before you land?

How many pistols are you guys going to do? Is it gonna be something insane like 25+ reps? Lol, because then I wont even try .

Pistols aren't that bad...I just realized my left leg has NO coordination, I feel like a 'tard! I keep falling over

Sensei

Practicing sitting in the bottom position helped me a lot. Also, doing pistols in shallow water (a pool).

Sweet!
All I do is pistol squats!!! I am pretty sure I could keep up with some of you folks on that one. I can usually bang out 10 with ease. Overhead press may be my sticky point tho.

Sensei
05-31-2007, 05:55 AM
Well, if you do 10, you'll probably win that event. Gotta win two of the three to win the whole thing.

FreeRider
05-31-2007, 07:26 PM
Hmm,
Interesting...today was leg day so after 1 set of squats (sore legs from work!) I decided to just try some pistols. I was able to crank out 8 per leg...so I should be able to hit 10 fresh.
I'll have to buy a jump rope and see. Interesting contest Sensei.......and Bearwolf.:D

PS - Pistols amazingly seem easier if you go ATF...also try throwing a 10 lbs in one hand and hold it out infront of you when you do pistols. Contrary to what you would think, the 10lbs can help balance you a little better and some find that it makes it easier to 1 leg squat like this...I find that it helps me a little and see no drop in reps.....usually.

Sensei
05-31-2007, 08:49 PM
Well Bearwolf, I think I'm going to have to give you the military press... I don't think I'm going to be able to make much of another attempt between now and our deadline. I was only able to do 80% of bdwt. (155lbs @ 194)... Pathetic, I know and you're already way ahead of that.

Sensei
06-01-2007, 10:17 AM
After discussion with Bearwolf, we decided to extend the deadline to December 31, 2007.

We also decided to make the contest between the two of us a contest for improvement from our current numbers. However, as a contest for the entire WBB membership, we'll stick with straight numbers.

Here are our current numbers:
Bearwolf
OH Press: 225 @ 245 lbs (91.8%)
Double JRs in a row: 3
Pistols: 0

Sensei
OH Press: 155 @ 194 (79.9%)
Double JRs in a row: 1
Pistols: 5

Figured I would do the overheads today. 200 pounds press at 194. Form was bad, but no leg drive. I did wear a belt (hernia). I didn't walk out of the cage because I am in my basement with nothing to drop the weight on if I fail. If any rule me out, let me know. I'll post the vid when it finally gets up on youtube. I don't know about the pistols or jumps, but I'll give both a shot. BTW, I really liked the training vid on squatting and will be using a lot of the techniques to improve my squat.

One of the trainers at the gym has been doing BJJ for 8+ years and wrestling for 22+ years. After watching me doing pistols he did several, a week later he told me that they were one of the best exercises he had ever done, that he hadn't been sore in his legs in over 10 years, they have improved his coordination (in turn takedown sprawl technique), and was not only suggesting but requiring his students to do them.

Long story short...he thanks you directly Sensei (and me indirectly for falling over alot trying to work on them and yelling "Yea, you try and do 'em!")

Mike G
06-10-2007, 09:54 AM
WTF! Looks like everyone else will be fighting for second on the pistols. Awesome job Pitbull, those were deep too.

Sensei, on a side note, I was wondering if we could have categories. Different ones for weight, age, sex, height, years of experience.... Just messing with you man. This is starting to shape up into a pretty cool contest. I can't wait to see one of you guys doing a Crossfit workout in your pretty outfit.

I really thought I had a shot at coming in on top with the pistols but there is no way that I'll get near 30.

I just did 16 pistols with my right leg, 15 on the left. It's been a little while since I have done these so I'll have to practice a little more and try it again. Next time I'll get a video of it.

At 235lbs body weight, I don't have any chance at the standing press. And jump rope. The last time I picked up a jump rope was probably 10 years ago.

Sensei

MPB
06-25-2007, 07:46 PM
I thought I was able to do 40 pistols no problem but damn this is insanely tough. I don't know how I managed to get 30 pistols. After doing that, basically my legs were shot and never felt the same. I could probably get more if I take a break from lifting for a while but as for now, training hard and making gains is more important than that. I'm going to see how many I can do when it's time for my periodization :D

Sensei
06-25-2007, 08:30 PM
MightyPitbull,
The contest's for fun - don't let it mess up your regular training. We started the contest to help us with goals (me = a bdwt overhead press, Bear = improve conditioning, lose weight), not to detract us from them.

You're in pretty good standing w. the pistols (at least for a while ;) )...

MPB
06-25-2007, 08:59 PM
Yea, I'll do that. It's just that competition and challenges make people to work much harder and to me, that part is very enjoyable as much as anything else.

The deadline is still very far away, which means there're going to a lot of crazy numbers :D

My pistol efforts still stinks...

No big update from me...
But I did get a 230 OH Press @ BW 238... so I'm at 96.6%... closer and closer to a BW press!!
