View Full Version : The Road to a New Deadlift PR ...

Anthony

One of my big goals for 2007 is to hit 585 (6 plates per side) on Deadlifts. Last year's max was 560.

So I've been working on my 5RM in an attempt to rebuild a decent base. When I plateau on 5 reps, I'll drop to 3RM and eventually go to singles.

Anyway, I'm probably jumping the gun since I still have a lot of work to get to 585, but last night felt pretty good and reaffirmed that I'm still on track ... thought I'd share. :D

You inspired me to do some heavy deads from the floor today. I had not done them in a while (been using bands, rack pulls and so on).

By the way, you look huge in that video!

By the way, I think he could pull the 6 plates for a single right now. He just did 5 for 5.

Anthony
05-21-2007, 08:26 AM
bear: that applies to the kids weighing 120 pounds and asking about their biceps! ;)

chris: only my last set was 5 reps, so I estimate my max to be around 565 ... still a few weeks before I'm in the 585 range!

Con

I forgot to mention this before but the angle is very good. You can see how you arch your back, but also see that the exact position(shoulders) doesnt necesarily have to be maintained. Obviously you have an arch, but this is what I was tryin to explain before with the shoulders thing.

Anyway, gl on goals. If anyone can do it, you can.

I've only done 5 reps with 475. If you did it with 505 I'm thinking you are pretty darn close to 585 for a max.

Great lift.

I noticed that you are using a underhand grip with both hands, never tried that before, I always use one over one under. Also been doing more sumo style lately, still trying to get used to it.

I noticed that you are using a underhand grip with both hands

Definitely not - mixed grip in this lift - left under, right over.

05-22-2007, 03:37 PM
Excuse me sir, could you please not drop the weights?

Nice pulls. Each from a dead stop, full reset, spending that much time at the bottom... screw the calculations, you've got 585. Man up and do it.

Strong as hell Ant! I agree that you should be good for 6 plates right now. Do you ever even use a belt on them? I get a lot from my belt on deads.

Anthony
05-23-2007, 09:06 AM
You bastards, don't build me up for 585 just yet! I need more time ... ;)

Chris: nope, I sold my belt years ago. Never felt comfortable and didn't get anything from it ...

05-23-2007, 10:18 PM

Definitely not - mixed grip in this lift - left under, right over.

Its hard to see on the computer that Im on, it's in serious need of more RAM, so videos are hard to see, it looked like both underhand but i was wrong.

Some side news ... found out this morning that my father has lung cancer. The first bout of cancer was over a year ago in his neck and the docs told us they got everything and he was in the clear. But he never fully recovered and a few weeks ago he was back in the hospital with pneumonia ... and they found out the cancer spread to his lungs and they can't operate. We aren't sure what the treatment options are, but the impression was anything they do would just prolong the inevitable. Needless to say, it was a day.

But, I tried to keep things normal. I went to work. I went to the gym. My food and water intake were pretty low, but I did my best to focus. I'm not happy with the rest between rep 4 and 5, nor the sloppiness in rep 5, but all things considered ... I'll take it.

Like everyone else I'm very sorry to hear about your father Anthony... You've got mad strength in the gym and I'm sure you've got some out of it too. Enjoy the time that you have with your father whether it be 10 months or 10 years.

All that aside... You couldn't decide between sumo and conventional stance? :p That's quite a narrow sumo pull IMO.

ALMOST triple body weight - 535x3 at body weight of 180. I wanted 5 reps, but was having an off day ... failed on 4 and decided to call it a day. I'll give it another shot in 8 days and if I don't hit 5 reps, I'll switch to triples from here on out.

Sorry to hear Anthony.

So when will the 585 be accomplished?

Anthony
07-08-2007, 08:16 AM
Alex: thanks ... probably within a month. I'm still going to push forward with the 5RM/3RM until I feel I can't make progress and then I'll switch to 1RM. But if I feel things going down hill sooner than that, I'll scrap the 5/3 and immediately go for the 585 just to make sure I get it. :D

Nice pull man. If I took that long down at the bar, I'd never get up.

I think that you think about the pull too much. I do all that focusing at the top. Once I go down there, it's all business. I'm constantly getting on my training partners about the same thing.
