I attended a meet being ran close to my house today. It was run by Shawna Mendelson at the gym she owns. It was small meet, only about 10 lifters...but some huge benching/attempting took place. Quick rundown:

One of my training partners, Jim "The Bus Driver", benched 430@198 and 44 years old in a hand me down single-ply Rage X.. It was his opener and he just missed 465. We put him in a bench shirt for maybe 6 workouts total. He's very strong. He will bench over 500 real soon in a meet.

Another guy I used to train with, but now mostly trains at his house and raw, benched 400@242 Raw and 20 years old. That was his opener and he did a full bench workout two days ago. He showed up at the meet to watch/help and Shawna asked him to lift. Pretty sick because he is tall with long arms.

An 18 year old kid from Staten Island benched 405(I believe) Raw and then tore his pec trying 425. I don't know his name or what he weighed. Strong kid though.

Now the real freaks:

Scott Sceppe(sp?)- 740@198!! New all-time record for that weight class. Straight nasty. He just missed 760 near lockout.

Glen Russo- 930@308(weighed 298)!!! Sick, Sick, Sick!!! 2nd highest bench of all time@308 and 4th highest overall. Took 1000 after that and dumped it on his belly, he was ok.

Scot Mendelson- Bomb@SHW. Missed 1015, No touch on 1055 and 1100. Yea, 1100.

:omg: Damn, did Scot get 1055 and 1100 locked out even though he didn't touch?

Nah, once he couldn't touch the spotters jumped on it.

What the F kind of shirt was Mendelson wearing that he couldn't touch 1100?

And 740@198 is just plain silly. Unbelievable.

I don't expect any less of Mendy, he is the perfect build for the bench and he has some silly drive!

He missed 1100. That's not so impressive. I could miss 1100. He's the greatest raw bencher in the world, but I'm tired of hearing how much he missed in a shirt. I guess it's cool that he put that weight in his hands, but I thought a bench competiton included pressing the weight back up to lockout. It didn't know it was a negatives contest. I'd rather see him bench 900 than miss 1100. JMHO. Greatest Raw bencher in the world, though.

RhodeHouse, I thought the same but I guess at some point in training he must of gotten these wts that he bombs with?
I don't know I give him props for trying to hit heavier stuff. Then again if he was lifting, I would be going mainly to watch him lift. I would think he would hit his opener even if it needed to be 900.

What happened to Scott is a problem with the shirts at that level. The guys are wearing shirts that force them to open with weights they may not be able to lockout. That makes a bomb the most probable outcome. I have no problem with equipped lifting, I just think that not being able to touch with 1000+ lbs is getting a bit goofy.
