Do the ingredients in a protein shake affect the way protein is used by the body? I put fat free skim milk, a banana, and peanut butter in my cutting shake which I drink post-workout. If I just put protein in water, would my body better use the protein at all? I hope that makes sense. I tried my best to explain.

Someone else with scientific proof can chime in, but the combination of other ingredients probably slows down the absorption of the whey protein. Mixing with milk is a good idea as you get both fast acting and slow proteins. And adding fat will slow down absorption as well.

Whey in water is absorbed relatively quickly.

This doesn't necessarily mean the effect of the protein right? I mean, my muscles will still feel the exact effect in each case?

No it won't effect what aminos that go to your muscles.

But keep in mind that not all of the amino's go to muscle building.

Mr. D's point is right on.
