View Full Version : Explanation Of "MALTITOL".. ?

I was curious as to what maltitol is? There are 11g of this stuff in my Atkin's choclate bars. Its supposedly a sugar alcohol that has no impact on blood sugar. Please help me out guys. I would appreciate it.

hmm... if anything, aspartame is an alcohol too. some ppl come up w/ brand names of known chemicals, but i dunno if that maltitol is the same alcohol

Interesting... it makes those Atkin's "Endulge" bars REALLY tasty whatever it is.

The present study was aimed to investigate the metabolic effects of acute and chronic oral administration of maltitol (4-O-i-D-glucopyranosyl-D-glucitol), a hypocaloric sweetener obtained from maltose by catalytic hydrogenation. Fifty grams of maltitol induced a increase lower glycemic and insulinemic than the same dose of glucose or sucrose. No variations of plasma glucose and serum insulin levels were observed after 180 min. A slight increase of plasma maltitol was observed 45 min after maltitol. The chronic administration of maltitol (10 g 3 X daily for 5 days) induced no variations of glycemia or insulinemia when compared with the same dose of sucrose. Plasma sorbitol levels were slightly higher after maltitol than after sucrose. Low amounts of maltitol were detected in the urine and feces.

Glycaemic and insulinaemic index of maltitol and maltitol-containing chocolate have been determined in healthy subjects with reference to glucose and compared with those of sucrose solution and sucrose containing chocolate. All maltitol containing products (solutions and chocolate) show a reduced glycaemic index. Insulinaemic index of maltitol solutions is also low, while that of maltitol chocolate remains high.
