View Full Version : Alternative to chalk?

My gym does not allow me to use chalk, but I've ripped my hand open twice already while deadlifting so I need something to prevent that. Using a different gym is not really an option right now, but I will when I go away to college in a few months. I actually plan to go to Albany Stength, a powerlifting gym.

For now I need some sort of alternative though. I remember somebody posted something that was like chalk, but wasn't messy. If I remember correctly, it was some sort of ball or something. Anybody have any idea what I'm talking about?

I used a small chalk ball. Just buy one from any rock climbing store. Itís not messy at all.

Putting on the chalk isn't that messy (unless you knock over a tub, like I have done). My guess is that they bitch about it getting all over the plates and bars.

Someone on the board uses it. Maybe Blood&Iron. I'd check out his journal and ask his opinion.

The materiel can slip between your hands and the bar, actually making it harder to grip. Also, it adds a bit to the diameter you have to grip around, which also makes it more difficult.

Plus, who doesn't love big man hands covered in calouses?

This is why I'm convinced that the pocket pal was invented by a weight lifter.

I'm not sure the brand but i've seen alot of gloves designed for powerlifting and seem to not hinder your grip at all.

Look at any ronnie coleman deadlift video hes got those gloves on with slits where ur hand rolls for the grip. Anyone know what those are? seems like a ideal solution

I decided to go with the liquid chalk. I'll post back when it arrives letting you guys know how it works for anybody who is in a similiar situation as myself.
