beginning to train toward XPC semi finals in october which is in approximately 11-12 weeks away. looking forward to this new challenge under hopefully very strict conditions. i had always taken pride in being able to lift under any conditions presented but the previous few years that hasn't really been tested aside from the RPS meet i recently competed in. i hadn't been in that kind of strict conditions in over 4 years when john bott and bob youngs were judging at the pro am. the best lifters in the world should be held to the tightest standards in my opinion and i hope to be a part of that come march at the Arnold. Much like tiger woods speaking on conditions at the british open this year when he said (paraphrasing) i hope the wind picks up all day and conditions get extremely difficult, that's what separates the field and pushes the best to rise to the top.
That is a great attitude to have Derick. I couldn't agree more with it! I'm sure you'll still kill it! And thank you for the kind words in my log
thank you sir!
Throwing practice/ME benchness
threw some highland games implements for the first time in almost a year.
approx a 14# stone
decided to commit to the spin this time around instead of the glide, i think my potential with this technique is much greater.
all throws were between 35 and 40 feet, some right on 40 feet mark. very happy with that with an unfamiliar technique and the lay off time.
heavy weight for distance
came back very quickly, i was double spinning relatively comfortably and within a few throws was hitting 28+ feet
very happy with the throwing today
close grip bench (thumb length from smooth)
295x3 bump on the last one i think
315x1 missed second
haven't done close grip work in literally years. always tore up my shoulders in the past but didn't feel too bad today.
got up from the last set with 225 seeing odd patterns like i had been staring into a light too long but they were more like squiggles than circles. was plenty cause for concern as it reminded me off the symptoms my dear friend cheryl clodfelter had when she detached her retinas benching a few years ago. needless to say i stopped there, for the following few hours i felt quite uncoordinated and my thoughts were really scrambled. its now been 4 hours and i'm starting to feel back to normal. hope it was just something with blood sugar but it freaked me out a good bit on the inside. fingers are crossed
Derek this is db, it was great to see you and get a chance to judge with you this weekend. all the lifters that spoke to me complimented us on the job we did. I felt like you called a really good and tight meet. Best of luck to you at the XPC, hope to see you again soon, and congrats on the recent engagement and 700lb dl. Youre a class act and the sport needs more people like you in it.
good to see you to sir! i heard similar from people throughout the day. only made one person mad that i could tell. thanks for all the well wishes, i appreciate it. hope all goes well for you at wpc worlds.
Just scanning through some of your entries... awesome numbers being put up! Congrats on the recent 700 pull!

in the volume stage of my revamped periodization scheme. had some very comforting and encouraging conversations at ETSU in the last 2 days about my developed training scheme with some of the best minds in the weight lifting world. it was amazing to converse with dr. mike stone who has dedicated his entire career and life to developing athletes and is one of the forefathers of western periodization and determine we had come to so many similar conclusions on training schemes coming from 2 very different ends of the spectrum (olympic lifting/track vs equipped powerlifitng)
squats - unequipped at RPE 7

plank rotations w/ 50# db & leg throws 3x20
didn't get to measure on my throws today but still am not finishing through like i would like. decent distances but still lots to improve on
best i've ever felt throwing the 56. spins felt comfortable and i felt in control and very fast on my 2nd spins. Jason said i went 30+ easily but i'm just gonna wait til we have a tape to think that.
close grip work on campus today
225 2x10 shoulders were absolutely fried. time to drop this for a while i think after saturday
115 4x8 easier than last week
902 rack pulls @ 181 is beastly
Why do you train throws? Strongman comp?
ha! thanks but i'm a 198'er now, i'm around 210 so not as impressive i'm afraid. i normally compete in highland games but i've been focusing on powerlifting this year and qualifying for the arnold next march so i haven't thrown aside from the last month at all.

shoulder work from job
14,000lbs all overhead over 3 days. done with this job now, only need to do 1/4th of the manual labor in the new job now and even with a large pay cut i'm looking forward to not wrecking my shoulders and elbows every week.
wanted to get some gear work in today and it just didn't work out, legs turned useless with lack of circulation.

briefs up to 675x1
suit straps down
715x1 shifted all over the place
