Yeah but he will be grappling against 160 ponders. I don't care how quick 160 pounders are, they are still 160 pounds, and they can't do much against someone at 184 pounds who is in shape and has good strength. 180 pounds is ideal to give you a good combination of speed, size and strength which will be lacking in someone who is 165 pounds.

I wouldn't try to make any weight class. In toughman competitions, size matters very little. Sure, at your current weight, you'll be going against bigger guys, but chances are you're quicker. If you lose a couple pounds, you'll get to go against smaller guys, but chances are they'll be quicker. Just be as good as you can be at whatever weight that you can be your best. Good fighters turn their percieved disadvantages into advantages either way.
