You do have a point Allyrulez. However, there are a large portion of 'bodybuilders' that also contribute to the 'advancing of the species', as you put it. Not all 'bodybuilders' are complete meat heads, spending all their time in the gym.

And not all "Fat dorks" are rocket scientist.. i know a bunch of bob's and they are far from it...
Meh, i just dont like solipsistic views like that.. I guess there's fuzzy areas on both sides, but that wouldnt make for an interesting article would it
This article actually reminds me of a friend of mine. Now he's not built like bob, quite the opposite in fact. He's only 18 so he's still pretty lean but a few years ago when I was just getting into weights he'd argue with me all day about how bad of an idea it is and that it's better to get a job working with your hands to get built and that weight lifting will give you "ugly" muscles. Anyway 2-3 years later he's asking me for brochures to my gym :D.
He's not knocking the guy for being fat, he's bashing the guy for complaining about something he has the power to change but refuses to do so.Quote:

good stuff, thats why i keep it real short when giving advice ,we take the time to help someone write a work out, explain diet , blah , blah and they work out one friggen time there loss.great inspiration
Amazing. This thread is still going........I guess there's a good reason for it, but damn, 3 years and it's still on the front page. NICE.

It was simply pointing out that people who are out of shape, shouldn't complain if they are not willing to do anything to fix that.
Feeling superior, on that point I do agree with you.
One last thing. If people ask my advice, I'll give it. What really ticks me off is when they ask for detailed advice, written down and everything, and then they don't take it, or anybody else's for that matter, and then complain about how out of shape they are. I don't mind the not taking advice part so much, its the complaining that gets to me.
This was a great read, and very inspirational... but I agree with nejar462. The condescending tone was a bit over the top. nejar and bonny both touched on what's at the heart of this issue: sacrifice.
If you want to change something about yourself (education, self-awareness, fitness, wealth, etc.), and you weren't born with genetic or social advantages, you have to be willing to sacrifice a lot to get what you want, or you don't want it badly enough. But that's not necessarily an issue of laziness, just priorities. If you spend 6-10 hours a week working out, 6-12 hours buying, preparing, and eating healthy meals, another couple hours reading new tips and guidelines for improved fitness, etc., that's your priority... and there's probably something else in your life that another person would consider you a "Bob" for neglecting.
To use an extreme example... it'd be very difficult to get really good at the guitar, bodybuilding, your job, your relationship, and be a straight A student all in one year. If you say "I wish I could play guitar better" while working 40 hours a week, 16 hours of class, and hitting the gym 3 times a week, it doesn't mean you're too lazy. It's an issue of sacrifice and priorities.
Making bodybuilding a priority over TV and beer is a definite start though.
Great article again.
^^God dam thats great, the whole learning 10 things at once thing is do-able, but takes a special dedication and a very strong will and desire.
I myself cant sleep (insomnia) properly when I dont hand in an assignment :study: on time (university) or dont do something I should have
Or if I eat something I shouldnt have, or dont want to train, or basically dont do something right, I usually beat myself up over it, but mostly this makes me a better person
"We lift weights and manipulate our diets so that we'll look good naked. Sure, it's healthy too, and we'll probably live a longer and more productive life than the average guy, but mostly it's about the naked thing. Truthfully, it goes beyond even that."
that was great well put

"You can't tell I'm a bodybuilder?! Look at my ass! Now, if that's not a nice round squat-built piece of sirloin, I don't know what is!"

Beautiful.
Man....I read this and if I didnt already do my workout tonight, the internet would be off by now and I'd be sweating my mutha****ing a$$ off pounding the weights.
Im gunna copy this for inspiration, dude!!!!
Very nice read, mang. I know plenty of people like "Bob". And it's fun being that guy in the 1% who is not.
1% here and I'm printing this off to put in my school's weightroom. Thanks again Daniel for the encouragement, but I read it at the wrong time :( Here I am having to wait until tomorrow to tear into the weights. This is instant inspiration.
EDIT: I read it when I was a n00b to the whole game and I hope it does for others what it did for me. Should be required reading for all n00bs.
Its already stuck up on my wall....
damn...just gotta bring back one of the most inspirational articles i have ever read...
bump
i needed the reminder tonite so here's a bump for anyone who might be feeling the same...
~out for my run and going to bed early so I can get up earlier and lift,
Lady
Bump.
New influx of newbies, and being the sensative, caring guy I am, I decided to show them the best thread here.
Why not make it a sticky?
I was just thinking about this thread a few days ago.. glad it resurfaced.
****, that was deep. Great read.
Wow, thank you for the post! Great read / inspiration!! My Dad sounds just like Bob..
What a ****ing loser!
That was possibly the best thing I've read in my entire life. Very inspirational...it almost brought a tear to my eye. That pretty much defines who we are and that is very appropriately titled " What seperates us from them.." I'll raise a glass to that, my friend. Damn good read. I can't even explain the feelings that post invoked inside me. I feel more motivated to strive towards my bodybuilding goals. That post is a keeper. ;)
Awesome! :)
Best Thread Ever. This should just be a stickie so we don't have to bump it every other day.
Ya, I remember reading this back when it was first posted. Awesome stuff.
Im down with that article.
I needed this tonight. Every time i read it, it's just as good as the first time.
When is this going to be a sticky!
I'm printin' this out and puttin' it up on my wall.
I know one too many "bobs."
Only one too many? I know more than i can count...Quote:

I'm emailing this to many Bob's, I started with my dad, lol
But at least my dad knows that it takes dedication and time and all that, and he is very strong willed, but just doesn't do it, I dunno why. I work out with him once in a while, so yea. He's a different kind of bob. He's a self-aware Bob, lol
Genius. Pure f*cking genius. Word for word that is how the story should be told. Very motivational and inspiring. I don't know what else to say lol.
Many people have printed this out. This should be INT34W38 famous soon lol.
Its a work of art, everytime I read it it almost brings tears to my eyes lol
that was a fantastic read, very inspirational

Damn good read.
Excellent read, best thread on WBB :P
i like the keith wassung article about his first years of training just as much as this one but that thread kind of went sour, so im just gonna bump this.
i actually wonder if bob showed up or not and what the next reunion was like around him.
Awsome post...just awsome.
Truly inspirational.
Aww man I'm gonna work out again right now. That whas funny yet very inspirational. Excellent read.
It's kind of funny seeing that again. When I first read maybe a year and a half ago or so I couldn't comprehend it, and I guess I was similar to the guy Bob and worked out for around a month and then quit. Now I read that again today, after I have started to live that new lifestyle during the past two months, my attitude after reading it has seemed to change greatly.
Before I was kind of offended reading the article, it didn't really make me feel to great since I guess I knew deep down I wasn't going to change my habits. I guess as I grew older that changed and now two months later and near 30 pounds into my cut I feel like I am coming from the other side of the table now, and no longer am I the one being challenged but instead, I am the one who challenging.
It was very motivating to read that again now and I can only hope that my current success continues.
I'm finally printing this and posting it on my wall. :)
Awesome read!
i figured that some new people will probably show up with the new year, and while i dont want to scare them away, this seems like a good thing to bump up there.
Why all the anger and condescension against people who don't like working out? The author acts like body building is some kind of noble calling.
it is noble in a way. bodybuilding is all about discipline and dedication. the post is not about insulting people who dont work out, it is meant both for entertainment AND as a wake-up call if you catch yourself slacking. the thing that is wrong with bob is not that he doesnt work out, it's that he complains he is out of shape but does nothing about it because he is LAZY and WEAK (both mentally and physically). NOBODY and i mean NOBODY has time to train, but somehow a lot of people do. they make time, not excuses.Quote:

Sorry for the going Confuscious, but I had to say it.
It is a great read...
But I just want to know why the guy writing it was hanging around "Uncle Bob" who was smoking?? Doesn't he know that second-hand smoke is even worst then smoking?? Breathing healthy is as important as eat healthy.
LOL.
To put it simple...they just suck. lol :rolleyes:Quote:

yeah, its motivation for me to be better than the "bobs" (people who dont work out)
I love seeing people struggling to do easy tasks in daily life, that just makes my workouts feel that much better.
This is my biggest complaint about people who fit Bob's mold. If you want to be overweight and out of shape, fine. But I draw the line at bitching about your condition one minute, then asking who finished off the Oreos the next.Quote:

Why would you debunk such a simple, innocent statement? All he was saying was that these people that are fat slobs, complain about it and yet can never seem to do anything about it are his motivation. His motivation to be better than them.
Funny that it was mentioned that 'we' can lead by example. My gym just moved to a new location and now the free weight room is blocked off from sight of the weight machines and the cardio machines. I smirked and said 'out of sight, out of mind?' to the attendant at the counter on my way out and she just smiled and said 'You guys are too scary.'
I guess in 'fitness centers' in particular Bob doesn't WANT to be led by example.
*sheds tear*, bravo ... bravo

Whether he/she/it wants/desires/attempts is totally/completely/ultimately up to "Bob" Clear/understand/comprehend /now/at this point in time/ already?
I really don't lift to "inspire" anyone (other than myself) at all. I seriously doubt you do either. If it happens, then it happens, but it's not something I am hoping for.Quote:

EDIT: Oh, and I'm not saying "Bob's" are my inspiration, I was refuring to what Daniel was saying in his original story. But I do not want to be like "Bob", and I don;t think you do either, so it does play some part in what we do.
Bump for new years' resolution newbs. Know that here on wbb we like new members. But we hate Bob.
But that's not what I was saying though. If you or I am lifting and some "Bob" sees what we are doing and becomes inspired because of that, then this is how we are "using these qualities to benefit others" (see Mr. anasthetic's post.Quote:

Great post Hulk!

One of my favorite reads ever. I'm gonna have to read this again later in study hall :D
Well I was trying to be realistic... anyone who is new in the game can't say they will stick with it because they really aren't sure yet, even if they act like they are. But anyway to follow up since that post I have stuck with the plan and have gained 25lbs since then, with a substantial about of muscle growth.Quote:

reading that article before lifting is the equivalent to listening to eye of the tiger in the locker room before a big football game.
