It's on ESPN2 here in the US all the time.
awesome.. some strong guys there.. I saw bits here and there..
some dangerous stuff though me thinks.
I saw parts of it. I saw the deadlift part. Top guys were pulling 750lbs+. Although, of course struggling like lil biatches and rolling the mofo bar up their thighs...surprised nobody's spinal cord didn't just rip out of their backside...
Ya, they are damn strong; but their lifts wouldn't count in a world class power lifting competition.
And the worse thing is that now days most of these stronman competitors are pretty damn solid.I mean yeah some might have 25% BF but take into account that they are 290lbs+ and that's scary
had some bad squat techinque in the final, used so much momentum.
The brittist guy wasnt bad, had good form.
atlas stones was good, done in under 30secs!
Andy Raynes squatting the truck for 9 deep reps was ace
Syntekz, are powerlifters stronger than the Stron Man Competitors
Some of the international level PL's are, at least in the powerlifts.
Strongmen are more capable on average in the strongman comps.
ok, but there is one powerlifting movement they do.
They lift a weight over their head, military press style, and I saw some Swede do 150kg for 23reps over his head.
Overhead press really isn't a PL movement, though it probably should have been instead of the bench press.
One of my PL buddies recently got asked to do a strongman meet. Thing is, overhead strength is so (relatively) weak for PL's that she's concerned about that movement.
An Olympic lifter would have no problem with that, but probably wouldn't do too well in anything else.
It's all how they train. They train specifically for each event.
Especially the event where they have to carry the rocks and put them on blocks. The Strong Men competitors train for months and months using rocks to gain strength.
So instead of doing overhead presses, they might train with HUGE boulders for months and keep increasing the weight just like a bodybuilder would using a barbell.
the storng men events require more endurance than powerlifters events do.
but there are quite a few powerlifter in the strong man comps as well.
Rock, there isn't really a who's stronger between P'lifting, O'lifting and strongmen. They each specialize in there own area. They all train a bit differently too as syntekz has said. In everyday life chances are you would want to have the special strengths that strongmen competitors have becuase they can be used in regular life.
Um guys, just so you know, nearly every one of the SM competitors are former champion powerlifters. So, there is really no argument here. The difference in the sports relates to specifity. For example, the strongest powerlifter currently (Franks?) would not win the SM competition if he tried it cold because many of the events require specific skill. Many of the SM events also require a good deal of muscular endurance that a powerlifter would not have from training for his sport. This is why it takes most of the SM winners a few years of getting acclimated to the events before they are able to win, they must develop the skill to go along with their massive power.
How come the US sucks so bad at WSM? You'd think a country with about 300 million people could field some better competitors.
all our "good" atheltes are in it for the money not the glory. Who could blame then though?
Any clue where the Worlds Strongest Man competition started? What country?
...when its so clear that I am the Worlds Strongest Man.:moon:
