What's the best way to clean stainless steel?

I have a steel chain that I wear and I forgot to take it off while spraying my back with that spray sunblock stuff, so now the chain is kind of yellowish and gunky.. what's the best thing to clean it with?

I'm assuming that you first tried water, right? Did you try mild soap (like dish soap) and water? That would be the next thing to try. Then windex or some other mild window cleaner. Then rinse it off and dry. If that doesn't work, you should then go for a stainless steal cleaner.

Ok I considered the stainless steel polish (I tried soap and water) but I didn't know if it was good for jewelry, I've only ever used it on the stainless steel sinks.
