What to wear to my step-brother's wedding..

My step-brother's wedding is in a week and I was just going to wear slacks, shirt, tie, sport's coat.. but the more I think about it I'd rather wear a tux or a suit. My dad's wearing a tux, he said I probably wouldn't have to wear one, but I think at least a suit would be nice. What do you guys think?

I'm assuming you're not actually IN the wedding party, or you would have been told what to wear, possibly provided with it. If that's the case, wear whatever's comfortable but nice. If there's a reception, you'll be stuck in whatever you've got on until the thing's over.

No I am not in the wedding. Hence why my dad advised against a tux. When I asked him why he's wearing one (since he's also not in the wedding), he gave the excuse that since he is escorting the mother of the groom, he needs to wear one.

I'd actually like to wear a suit.. of course this means I would have to go buy one before Saturday.

You can never go wrong with a suit. Even if you are a little too dressed up, you'll look respectable. You can almost BET that there will be other people wearing suits so you wont be the only one.

Go with a suit. You can always keep your jacket in the car when you get to the reception to dress it down a bit. Don't forget a tie tack/tie chain. Men who do not wear tie tacks/tie chains should be executed.

Good luck getting a suit and having it tailored by Saturday morning!

Getting a suit off the rack and having it fit right w/out alterations is like winning the lottery.

I would go with a navy suit, white shirt and a tie with some color. Black shoes and socks. Don't try to "make a statement" with your tie like any sort of novelty tie. Sure, that "Party Naked" tie at Spencer gifts looked cool in the store...

Don't get a cuff linked shirt. When people don't wear a suit often, they never look really comfortable. Having that look with cuff links makes you seem like a tool. No tie tack either. Don't over accessorize.

I'm a big fan of suspenders, but the button kind--never the clips (see above reference to being a tool). And never, ever, ever a belt with suspenders!!

Get a dress shirt that fits your neck. Nothing worse than having a shirt whose neck is two sizes small.

If you can't get a tailored suit, and you sports jacket fits well, by all means, wear that. Make sure everything matches, though. I tend to prefer darker jackets with lighter pants: eg navy blazer and tan pants with navy/black socks and brown or black shoes.

Alternately, you can go tan or grey jacket with navy pants. But if you go with dark pants, always wear black shoes.

As in my previous post: don't try to make a statement with your dress other than "damn, I look good." You don't need a flashy shirt or a Jeff Gordon tie or a pin striped zoot suit or a fedora and a cane.

You don't want anyone to be saying: "I can't believe he actually wore that!"

Well I'm headed over to Men's Wearhouse after classes today and they do alterations at the store, so I'm hoping that if I tell them 'hey, I need this for a wedding on Saturday' that they'll be able to rush it or something. If not, then I have the slacks with the sport's coat as a backup plan. Not planning on going too fancy, but sorry BG I always wear a tie-tack when wearing a tie (it's a very simple gold one with a stylized 'U' on it for my family's last name). I just like suits better than the slacks and jacket approach. I like everything to match and be very uniform (as opposed to the shirt by this, pants by someone else, jacket by yet someone else approach) and what can I say I like to look good.

    Good enough.

Get a dark suit, though. Perfect for weddings, funerals and job interviews.

Go buy a nice looking Batman suit. It is dark, so it's perfect. Don't wear a tie, as it doesn't go very well with the batmask.

I figured black would have the most uses after the wedding. But now I'm beginning to wonder about shirt color. I was thinking a very light blue or an 'earth' color (which was a very light brown. Since the wedding has a fall theme I was thinking the earth color would be good, but my date's dress is brown and I didn't know the rules on wearing a similar color as your date. Especially since I don't know what shade of brown she's wearing. A female friend of mine suggested maybe a maroon which would still fit with the Fall thing and according to her matches any brown.

PS TwiloMike I'm a bit disappointed in your short comment on this thread. I fully expected you to give an entire breakdown.

I'm not a big fan of dark colored shirts with a suit. The darkest dress shirt I have is a kinda royal blue Ralph Lauren polo. Everythign else is a lighter color: maize, light blue, pink, light tan (ecru I guess), light green, white, eggshell.

To me, maroon dress shirts go with piano key neckties and mullets.
