    Help with my computer.

Does anyone know anything about computers.

Mp pc runs with windows xp and all of a sudden wont recognise a wireless network.
I have checked the wireless card and that it is turned on in automatic mode.
My router is working fine and will connect with an ethernet cable, but wont find or recognise any wireless network while searching.

    Help

sorry I dunno too much here, but just in case you didn't already, power cycle everything. Disconnect all your routers/modems/etc, the data and power cables, wait like a minute, then reconnect everything. There's usually a pattern you're supposed to remove / reconnect them in, I know it was different when I got a different setup.

Check the router settings and make sure wireless is still enabled. If you have another computer with wireless or a friend with a laptop, see if a different computer can receive that wireless signal. What kind of computer/network card is it?

go into the list of wireless networks stored for that card and remove them, then do another search for available networks. This will require you to re-enter the wireless settings for they wireless router, so don't do this unless you know the settings.

Sometimes spyware loves to attach themselves to your network settings.

I've had a similar problem, but the fix for me was just to turn off anti-virus program.

That's not a fix. What anti-virus were you using? Don't use your computer without an anti-virus.

Funny enough, I've had this install going now for a few months with no anti virus. You'd be surprised how much **** people get on their own rather then through "sneaky" business.

I don't know why the computer won't work mommy... well if you weren't into every animal porn site on the net it probably wouldn't have any issues. I run a hardware and software firewall and spyware blaster.

    Pft.... Scared?

Haha, I haven't used an anti-virus in years. When you have a ****ty computer you don't need that extra stuff running to slow you down! And now I'm running linux so I really don't need to worry about getting a virus.

I agree with WBBIRL though... People get viruses through their own stupidity for the most part.

Um...you'd be surprised how much crap you get on your computer when you're not running an anti-virus of some kind. My friend had that same mentality...then his computer started slowing down to a halt. He had 1,400 viruses and spyware. No that isn't a typo. Needless to say, a few of the viruses chewed through his hard drive and he had to replace it.

Anti-virus software doesn't slow down the computer. Crappy software like Norton slows down the computer. You gotta find the right one.

Scared? Hardly. I get maybe one virus every 6 months and when it appears, it's eradicated immediately. I use NOD32. It has a ridiculously low memory footprint so it uses barely any CPU to run and it's rated one of the best anti-virus software out there.

Yes, a lot of people browse too much porn and **** up their computers...it's usually the teenagers doing **** at home when mommy and daddy are gone. This is the case for 90% of my customers. I own an IT repair business and yeah...porn is definitely a major offender. As weird as it seems, I disinfect the keyboard and mouse before using customer's computers. I don't care if they frown at me, I don't trust people's one-handed computer skills. But not all viruses/spyware come from porn. People that use P2P or LimeWire or any of those apps get that stuff all the time, even if they're just downloading music. Hackers also trace millions of computers for open ports and if your computer isn't well protected, they send packets of virus bull**** into your computer.

But like you said, you're on Linux now. No viruses for you.

Spyware Blaster is good because it prevents crap from ever installing in the first place. Spybot and WindowsCare are also good. Together they block about 100,000 spyware.

But I guess if it wasn't for porn, I wouldn't have a business.

I've never bothered to look for anything. I never really saw a need for it.

I was just kidding about the scared thing... <-- should have added that to indicated I was being funny. I'll make note of that virus scanner though... There are 3 other computers in my house still running windows (they aren't mine!!!)

I've been using bittorrent for a few years now and I've had absolutely no problems downloading anything (Windows XP, songs, movies, etc.) With Limewire or other similar programs it's easy to download a fake mp3 but with bittorrent you see the write-up and many sites have sections where people can comment. I love it

Out of curiosity... What kind of certifications/training/education do you have?

Dude...I know you were kidding about the scared thing.

Well you're not the average user. A lot of people can't tell the difference between bad files and good files. I mean...if you see an MP3 that's only 150KB and you download it, you're an idiot. But most of the people I know don't even pay attention to things like that. I've never in my life had my computer crash from any sort of virus/spyware/whatever. Porn is usually always the culprit. If you like porn, get a Mac or something.

Out of curiosity... What kind of certifications/training/education do you have?
Well I've been tinkering with computers since I was like 5 or something. But since I wanted to start a business, I decided to get at least some valid certification. What's funny is, half my customers are ex-Geek Squad customers who were utterly pissed off at them and wanted to find someone new, or they call me to undo whatever it is Geek Squad did. They're a joke. I have A+, Networking, etc... Things like that. I didn't really learn much in those classes that I didn't already know. The people in my A+ class were absolute morons. The class started with 30 people. By the end of the class there were 8, and over half of those failed. I got a 98.5% on my final. I don't know why people couldn't stay in or even pass that class. Meh. Whatever.
