Hey fellas I went to see my doc because I get too much heartburn and he says to do some ultra sound. So he gets the results and says that I have too much fat in my stomach and that I should cut down on eatingThe thing is my friend's uncle has been just diagnosed with stomach cancer because he did not do anything about his occassional heartburns. What do you guys think? Should I see another doc? I am 5"9, 192lbs, 33inch waist, 16% bodyfat.
Are you really 16% bodyfat, or is that a hopeful estimate? If it's legit, it sounds like that doctor has no ****ing idea. Go see someone else.
That doesn't even make any sense.

Yeah, if you're really 16%, the Dr is a jackass. Get another opinion.
What if hes 16% bf but all his fat is in his stomach? :o

Visceral fat (fat inside you around organs, etc) is the first to go away when starting to diet.
So, it shouldn't take you too much (dieting) to fix it.
What measurement method was used to determine your BF%?
For everyone else reading, if he was measured at 16% using calipers or another innacurate method, then of course visceral fat was not included.
In which case, 16% would be possible while having a problem inside that needs attention.

I used this thing you hold on both hands to measure my bodyfat.
Well, that sounds accurate.

Like Slim said, his bf% doesn't have much to do with the amount of fat around his organs. Not sure why you guys are all going off on the doc. He's the one that had 12+ years of training, and the op said they performed an ultrasound.
Why not see another doc if you really want a second opinion? If not, I don't see how your condition sounds that rediculous. 16% is pretty far from skin and bones anyways.

I agree with Slim.
Visceral fat is the least healthy kind of fat. It messes with insulin sensitivity, among other things. Your body would function better without it.
The wording of the initial post is confusing. Did he actually say "too much fat in the stomach and that you should cut down on eating"? That just sounds bizarre. Is the doctor talking about visceral fat or subcutaneous fat? How would either of those lead to heartburn?
Slim definitely knows more than I do, but I'd still suggest a second opinion.

He was probably saying two separate things:
1) you have visceral fat around your stomach which can lead to health problems in many different body systems
2) you should adopt a healthier diet to reduce your chance of getting heartburn and stomach ulcers from ****ty food, and also to lose some fat
225lb @ 17% bodyfat, currently cutting
Current lifts while cutting (all raw): bench 275x4, squat 365x8
Estimated current maxes: 300 bench / 450 dead / 450 squat
Competition / Gym PRs (from March 08)
Bench: 325 raw / 385 loose shirt
Deadlift: 450 raw ADFPF 04/26/08
Squat: 405 raw
so dieting doesn't reduce visceral fat (the internal fat lining between the organs)???
How do you fix this problem?
'In order to alter the inertial mass of weights, you must become one with them, like a machine, the totality of your motion is as one'
Any sort of extra weight in the abdomen region can aggravate GERD (acid reflux... frequent heartburn). Any extra pressure on the stomach forces acid upwards, causing heartburn. Extra fat can cause extra pressure. Unless you are underweight, most doctors recommend losing extra fat. It helps to relieve some of the pressure and lessening the heartburn.
Did he give you any medicine to help your GERD? Did he give you a list of foods to avoid? If his only solution was to lose weight, I would consider going to a more specialized doctor. There are plenty of ways to help GERD that don't involve telling a person of average weight to lose some fat.
