can one train one's body to recruit (get more) fast/slow twitch muscle fibers?

someone (several people; my immediate family actually) said you don't recruit more of one type, but you 'make them bigger'. furthermore, the ratio you are born with ( like 30-70 favoring slow twitch, for instance ) can't be changed no matter how you train.

umm. is that right? give me the quick and dirty version i guess.

    To paraphrase:
    Recruiting more = getting stronger.
Making them bigger = making muscles bigger and stronger

Why do you think people with smaller muscles can lift more than people with big muscles? For instance power-lifters usually don't have muscles quite as big as bodybuilders but they can still lift more than bodybuilders. This is because their bodies (CNS) have learned to recruit a higher percentage of muscle fibers during each contraction/flex.

Or are they asking if you can change the ratio of fast/slow twitch fibers in your body? If that's what they're asking then I would think you can not change that specific ratio.

    It's not worth worrying about.
    Squats work better than supplements.
"You know, if I thought like that, I'd never put more than one plate on the bar for anything, I'd never use bands or chains, I'd never squat to parallel or below, and I'd never let out the slightest grunt when I lift. At some point in your lifting career (assuming you're planning on getting reasonably strong and big), you're going to have to accept that most people think you are some kind of freak." -Sensei

I don't believe you can. I think the term is sprinters are born cross country runners are trained. I think with certain training fast twitch can become more effective aerobically. However, the opposite is not true, type I fibers will never create the force of type II
