deadlifting + core work with the bad back...

This might be coincidental, and totally off base, but...
I added DLs to my routine about a month ago. Done 5 sessions including today, and added hyperextensions with a 10 or 25lb plate to every other workout or more.
Before DL/hypers: Back was STIFF, inflexible, and I got that old twinge a little bit like I was straining my spine.

After DL/hypers: my back is really feeling awesome. More flexible, stronger than ever. I'll never break records with my back the way it is but I have made insane progress. See the sig for a quick rundown if you're curious.

I have been bludgeoning the core along with all the deads and whatnot. I will only do more because my goal is core strength along with everything else, just to support my lower back.

Is this a coincidence or are properly executed deadlifts really THAT good for your back? I will never have to worry about compression, there is little left of the inside of my L4/5 disk anyway. The annular rings were fine apparently after the surgeons dug it out. Has anyone with back problems (that used PERFECT FORM) every experienced anything like this?

The only other option I can think of is I'm strengthening my core faster than I am adding weight on my pulls. I am not pulling a heck of a lot for the average person and I am dying to add more weight since I KNOW that I'm capable of more than 225x4. I'm not willing to go overboard though

I'm hooked either way but what do you all think?

btw.... THANK YOU for all the advice and amazing info I have found, in educational posts, links and the info I found in some journals of amazing lifters. You all rule in my book.

The deads are going to strengthen your back at a decent clip, but you've got to be careful. I can't pull from the floor but once every 4-5 weeks now. With a history that includes bulges and herniations, you've got to learn to pay very close attention to your body.

Fuck, fight, or hold the light.

You aren't kiddin Chubrock... I am paranoid as someone should be. Sorry to hear that about your deads, did you screw up some disks?
My spine has been really happy with what I'm doing. That first day only left me with sore muscles and no "twinge" like I got before. My theory is to do at least 2-3 more weeks of 225, adding reps or sets strategically until it gets really easy. Honestly it was pretty freakin easy to pull today but that little voice in my head (the reasonable one at least) told me this is enough for today.
It just sucks because I can feel that I am still far away from a serious slowdown in muscular strength and I'll never know my pre-injury potential. I am eventually going to be strong enough to lift 315 but getting there will take time. I'll steal my girlfriend's digital vid camera when I get higher in numbers so you all can see my oddly-proportioned ass pull hahaha

I tore some muscles in my lower back awhile ago that lead to a bulge in L4-L5. I can still pull, but I've got to be very careful with how I structure things.
