Yep. I though the kids were small last year. This year the younger kids are ridiculously tiny. It might also be that were getting bigger and so everyone else seems smaller.

    I agree.

    Sightly off topic:

With many new anti bacterial gimmicks and air purifiers and new ailment cures it will be Darwinism at its best. If people have not built immunities to their world around them due to all of the gimmicky health stuff it is a matter of time before something very simple comes along and wipes these people out.

While, I, drinking my unpurified water, living in an unsuper-airfiltered house and not using antibacterial soap every time I get germophobic will be chugging along just as normal, while the people are dying from some variation of the common cold. (extreme example, I know.)

Would it not make more sense to aim at having the strongest immune system? Of course it would, but then the drug companies will not be able to sell their super germ getter outers and we would not need to go to the doctor every time we got a sniffle.

This all may sound somewhat dogmatic but it is simply an observation I have made comparing various lifestyles.

For example. My cousins who are 6 and 7, dont even know how to ride a bike. They have never climbed a fence, didnt have a sandbox to play in, never played cops and robbers/tag/etc.. never used a cap gun before, never gone tobogganing, never built a snow fort, and i'm sure theres tons of other things they have missed out on. All they do is sit on their computers, play gamecube, and watch tv.

When I was a kid my mom used to not let me in the house after school. She would make me play outside with the other kids on the street. I cant even count all the times we got into mischief or did crazy things. Parents nowadays are WAAAYYY too concerned about their kid growing up and going to harvard. I actually feel bad for them because of all the things they have missed out on. Whenever they come over, I ask them if they want to go play road hockey and they just say "i've never played. can't we just play on the computer?" It's really quite sad.

Those are actually good points zen. I remmeber a bio teacher once telling me anti-bacterial soaps are a major contributor to antibiotic resistence in bacteria.

I grew up on a farm around goats, chickens, cats, dogs, pigs, catlle, you name it. While you drank tap water, I was getting my water pumped from the ground...I WILL OUTLIVE YOU ALL!!!

But more on topic, my grandfather passed away at nearly 80, yet he chain smoked several packs a day into his 60s without having any health issues related to smoking until he was 63. The only reason he stopped was because his lungs at that age couldn't handle smoking....no cancer, no heart problems...etc.

Another thing to keep in mind besides antibiotics is the quality of the food we eat. Growing up on a farm in eastern europe means being relatively self sufficient and living off of what you grow.

Nothing like milk that's still warm from the cow's teet..or goat's. mmmm I miss those days.

Yup. Sad sheltered little ones all growing up to be internet trash talking pussies. While some kids are still actually outside growing balls and immune systems, a majority seems to be inside hakin teh webz or playing video games. How will kids ever break bones or get scars from burns and falls. I see pain tolerance as a kind of immunity to these types of things. When you get lots of bumps and bruises as a kid, you can take a big whomping much easier later on if it happens. If you are babied forever you will get overwhelmed and not know what the hell to do if ever in a panicy emergency situation.

*picturing one of those little pasty white kids that play inside a bubble with spf1000 on* Yup, that's how they're gonna be.

That really is insane, when I was younger I had nintendo when it first came out and I still played outside 10x more then I ever got on the nintendo. Even when Sega came out I got it and I still played outside a ton, I would really only ever play those systems when my friends wanted to or I was in for the night. Maybe if none of my friends were around I would play to, but even then I would just go climb trees and **** by myself.

I'm going to basically do the same thing your mom did except with my daughter I'll probably have her enrolled in after school sports. I'll let her choose them of course but shes going to have to choose something.

I played soccer and snowboarded as a kid. I played cops and robbers and raced during recess. As I entered highschool video games took over and I only snowboarded during the winter. I was so unhealthy... I wont let me kids do that!

I have no clue when the last time I ran was. I barely ever sit around and play video games or just watch tv, but pretty much the only thing I do outside is golf or do yardwork.

This was a topic in one of my classes this year how children now-a-days don't get a lot of exercise. It seemed like when we were growing up we were playing road hockey, climbing trees, rollerblading, skateboarding, making tree forts etc. My teacher who lives in a neighborhood with a lot of families said there are never kids out in the streets playing tag or running around, I definitely won't let my kids sit around the house.

yeah my cousins, they're too damn sheltered. I remember being a kid and walking around with fingers dangling half off and bleeding and I still have the scars to show for it. Its just like whenever theres an issue someone else is responsible. My one cousin, hes in 5th grade weights 80 lbs and is 4 foot some inches. I curl him for fun. But hes so tiny, and I would say its more to do with parents perpetuating insecurities and **** like that. My other cousin, she can no longer look at chicken carcasses or see chicken being cut or picked from the bone it makes her sick. Seriously thats just being weak. I remember being a kid and breaking open a robin's egg and I felt terrible and it looked like thick OJ and every time I had a drink of OJ all i could think about was I am drinking baby bird and this makes me sick, but if I told my mom she would've been like thats fine drink out of the toilet. These cousins of mine, they would get the works, if thwey couldn't bare drinking OJ then maybe substitute pomagranate juice or carrot or beet juice or some ****. These children just need to experience more pain I think.

Now this may be a little off topic but it bugs the **** out of me. I've got this friend from hs who graduated from college last spring. He sits at home not looking for jobs and he brews beer alot and on the weekends he goes back to his college and parties. Now I incessently bugged his family about telling him to get a job and doing productive **** and you know what I get? LEt him do what makes him happy. Why should I? This oversized child is living with his parents with a college degree in photography, which i would hardly call a degree, more like a this proves he took a 4 year vacation, doing nothing at all. What make him HAPPY is terrible for survival at the least. He has no motivation and no focus. Of course he did apply for the peace corps and the ytold him they'd ship him off next feb, but really thats no reason to be a leach for the next 10 months.

I was mother****in' floored when they said let him do what makes him happy. I couldn't believe it. So i just backed off but really i wanted to say was in 10 years when hes still brewing beer in his parents basement working on finding a job, and no career in sight I want you to smile when I say I told you so because life isn't about doing what makes you happy. Its about doing what needs to be done and ****ing enjoying it. If you have the luxury to not work for survival then don't you think perhaps you should be productive? I think so.
****. I hate lazy people. Whether deserved or not. If you've gone ahead and made a life where you don't have to work ever you should be doing something to progress yourself or your society. With 24hrs a day of free time, at least go for a ****ing run. ****.

I guess since I'm young I can really remember it well. If it wasn't raining and was warmer than 45 deg. me and my brothers were forced outside at my house. We didn't even mind. We had atleast 15 other families living near us with kids to play with and had a creek, trees, playgrounds and a pool. We would make up our own games, play hide and seek, tag and all of that and even explore the sewers.

Then when I was in 5th grade we moved and still had stuff like that to do and I am still always outside at 16 playing sports or just hanging out/working but my little brother (6th grade)for the past 3-4 years has played video games everyday after school until he goes to bed. it makes me sick, he doesn't want to do anything like shoot hoops, throw a football or any of that. If i try to force him to do it he starts crying (who the hell cries at 12 because he has to go outside?) and my mom says leave him alone hes having fun. Whatever, and when shes not home I make him go outside and the second she pulls up to the house he cries and says i was hitting him and beating him up. Carrying him outside isent beating him up, and I use to wrestle with my older brother, dad, grandpa and uncle all the time and I didn't cry like that

Doesnt make me happy the way hes gana end up

I'm so confused. The opening post is about how kids are getting "smaller"...which is kinda crazy cuz the average height of an adult male (not to mention the obesity rate) has been increasing over the past few decades. There are some skinny kids, but... so what? there's nothing unhealthy about being skinny as long as you aren't starving yourself to be that way.

And yet every response has been about how kids are too sheltered and lazy. Which I agree with wholeheartedly. <_<

yeah. the conclusion is if these tiny people got out more and got their asses handed to them in various aspects of life they'd be bigger.

hell, if you want proof that people are getting bigger just find some old school yearbook of your parents' or grandparents' and find a picture of the Football team. Even the offensive linemen weren't breaking 170lbs 40 years ago <_<

I don't think kids are getting smaller, were just getting bigger/older. I even asked my dad when I went back to my high school hockey game and he said me and my class was the same way.

But in terms of going out side all the time? Hell yea! Street hockey, basketball, baseball, even football occasionally! Hell in grade school/middle school we even had a little fight club where we woudl fight in the neighbors back yard when she wasnt home because she had huge shrubs and no one could see us. it wasn't anything serious or fierce but it was still something we did. Play till the sun went down, and then some more if the lights came on soon enough.

tons of skinny ass kids, because of aforementioned reasons: video games, internet, huge flat-screens w/ digital cable, etc

I say boot the kids outside most of the day at a young age
