this is i guess what a chest should look like
and attached is what my chest looks like
you can see that on the bottom of my chest near the breast bone (sternum area), there's no chest muscle and it's flat
I've tried declines and close grip bench and did not seem to help.
Is this just some birth deformity or do I just have to target that area harder?
You just need to get the muscle bigger with benching...its like making a painting. You start off with a blank canvas that is worthless then you throw some paint on and when the painting is half-finished it will look a little odd but then once its complete you will have achieved what you want. My cent: stop worrying about inner chest and just keep eating and lifting solidly until the muscle fills out. You can't change your genetics.
Stats: Bodyweight : Current= 150 lbs, Height = 5ft11.5
Bench Press:160 lbs/Squat:225 lbs,/Deadlift:305/Total:675lbs/
Not strong yet, but getting there.

Muscle fibres are smaller where they attatch at the sternum. The shape of your rib cage plays a part in the appearence of your upper chest too. Especially if you don't have much muscle to begin with. Just eat and lift heavy don't obsess over the little details.
Could be pectus excavatum, if it is then it's definitely a minor case of it. Doesn't mean you can't make it look better though. Just eat and lift.

alot of that is going to be genetic as well

Your chest is not quite as shiny. I'm sorry to be the breaker of bad news.
You have no muscle on your chest at all.
That's the actual problem.
Solve that, and you'll be happier with the inner portion.
eh you're doing ok man...just keep adding weight to the bar![]()
Nobody here is going to admit it, but pressing movements suck at building up the inside of the chest. Throw cable flyes into your routine and see where that gets you.
gain 30lbs and it'll fill out

Incline flys helped me man.
It's genetics. You can't change the origin of a muscle, period.
If you build some muscle, however, it will become unnoticeable. Have you ever seen 300? Notice anything wrong with Gerald Butler? No. It's because it looks fine to everyone except you, but look at the same spot on his chest...
No flies. No incline. No decline. Nothing special is gonna help. Just do work and it'll be fine.
PS I got the same **** with my pecs you'll get over it after you start noticing how common it is.

Same for me skimmilk68. The gap is starting to look smaller now that I've gained some muscle. It helps!

Whiteman90909 is correct, you will never have muscle there. Consider it your own body building fingerprint!
My best physical feature is said to be my chest. I've stuck to doing dumbell chest exercises for the past year or so and I've had so much improvement. Keep eating good and lift heavy. Also, on a side note, I work the chest twice a week and sometimes I just keep it to once a week depending on what I'm striving for. I'd say try out some supersets. Right when you finish your barbell bench press jump right into a set of dumbell bench presses.
