There can be a lot of variance from individual to individual.
When I had a low 600 lbs raw deadlift I had pulled 500 lbs x 11 stopping each rep on the floor. After getting 585 lbs x 5 I pulled 645 lbs the next week, and then about 1-2 months later hit 655 lbs x 2 because I had been deadlifting more. A couple of months later hit 600 lbs x 5 touch and go at a demo and it was pretty tough.
If you are able to really psych yourself up and know how to make your body peak then sometimes you can go well beyond what you would hypothetically be able to do with reps. For instance I know of guys who may be able to 1 RM 35-50 lbs more than their 2 RM, which in general does not make much sense. My thoughts are that once you can hit 585 x 3 or 600 lbs x 2 without hitching you should be able to pull 625 lbs (or at least be able to break it from the floor and get close).

i definitly know there will be a variance as some have great brute strength & others more conditioning. Also when i pull it is always a full stop/set then go, never a touch & go.
I have gotten 601 to break the floor my last two meets but after a few inches thats about it. I maybe giving up mentally as well.....
If i can get it a few more inches i'd be golden. I can do rack pulls with a lot more than i can pull. 675#x 3-4 from knee & 725#x3 just above the knee.
I am working on 5x5 & defecits now to get my floor speed up. Just did 475 5 sets of 5 last week & 485# 5sets of 5 last night from a 1.5" defecit.
Thanks for your info.....

Form looked pretty good throughout. Had it recorded to see if my form stayed tight. Looks so much faster/smoother than it felt!

It sounds to me like you need more practice with the heavy single. It's a different mindset to achieve the perfect competition rep as opposed to multiple reps. I see guys all the time who are rep warriors who can do 5's with pretty heavy weight, yet throw 20 lbs. on the bar and it won't budge from the floor. It rarely correlates to a heavy single. I haven't pulled for reps in 2 years and I just PR'ed with 744(gym) and 733 (meet) a few weeks ago. Most of the training has been multiple heavy singles with short rest periods. Just my 2 cents...

what would you suggest.....warmup.....heavy triples till its heavy then go to singles......like 535, 565, 580....and up it like 5# each the following week??

This was a recent Max Effort DL session:
135x5
225x3
315x2
405x1
495x1 Added briefs and suit
585x1
675x1x5 -5 sets with 90 second rest periods.
Accessory work after that was weighted chins, shrugs, band pull aparts....upper back is my weak point, so I hammer it 2x/week.
Try not to turn your warmup into a workout. It's only there to raise core body temp to make the CNS fire more efficiently. I seem to get warm really quickly. Others may take a little while longer.
Your vid lift looks nice and strong.

great stuff. I'l give it a try. so say I start w/ 550 for 5 sets of 1 & get it. should I add 5 or 10# the following week till I miss?

I think 5#/week would work for a few weeks in a row and then you might lower the load back to 560 and work up again from there. Looks like 550 is 90%+ 1rm for you, so realize you're pretty heavy for your current strength level.
I've used this template for the past 3 or so meets. Last year, I knew if I pulled 635x1x5 with 90sec rests that I was stronger and would most likely PR at the meet. Next meet, I pulled 655 for singles and short rest and got another PR. Same thing this time around, 675/singles/90sec and PR.

One last thing- you might consider doing this every other week. I don't know how well you would recover from doing it consecutive weeks when factoring in your squat training volume. Play it by ear.
yeah, I figured id do like for 2 weeks, then do some sumo work & then come back to this for a week or two & then something else....etc! Its tough being a full meet guy....not a one lift specialist!! haha

Your pull looks real strong. I am close in numbers and training so this has helped me out as well. Are you competing this weekend Blownby? If so - good luck man.

you could also try some work with a 2 or 3" deficit to help getting it off the ground...... maybe some chain work to get the overload.....
are you a sumo or conventional puller?
Looks like your knees come in a little. Have you tried moving your hands out a little to let you push the knees out and get your hips more into it?
I used to hold & stand wider. I am working on bringin my stance & hands in. especially on this workout

Blownby,
Kicka** work for a 198'er!
Based on the 545x3 you should be hitting in the 625 range... Good luck!
This is me in powerlifting for deadlifts (was the exact opposite in wrestling). I NAILED 551 in competition - in fact I was told I left plenty of lbs. on the platform - but sometimes I have a hard time hitting really heavy singles in the gym.
BTW, to the OP: YOU ARE A FREAK! For a 6'0 198er your numbers are freaking insane! Do you cut weight or do you just have a naturally low bodyfat percentage or something?
