    Martial arts

Hi there people, it appears that many people here also train in a fighting art. I would just like to hear people opinions on these arts. For example; why do you train? Do you think you art is effective? What do think are the weaknesses/strengths of you art? What about the philosophy behind the whole thing?

I would be interested to hear people thoughts and opinions. An opportunity to learn and share.

kickboxing, train to get a bit fitter and its hella fun, never been in a fight to see if its effective, im not sure if there is much of a philosophy behind it but i love it anyway.

aikido is pretty interesting imo, that whole ki thing is awesome.

    muay Thai

I studied muay Thai on a non-competitive level for awhile and had to stop because of school. It was an excellent cardio workout. If you want to feel a burn in your arms try jabbing and crossing for 3 minutes without stopping. I'll never forget my first day of training. For the entire week my legs and arms were in pain.

As for my opinion, I found it to be much more demanding and realistic than Tang Soo Do which I was also taking at the same time. As someone who likes to stay fit, I think muay Thai provides an incredible workout and training on a competitive level would have been even greater.

Muay Thai's round kick is....a monster. I was sparring with two friends who were Kenpo stylists. They both got close to me and I got caught up in their hands until I pushed them off balance and kicked their leg. Both stopped fighting after I did that

Every style has its good points. It really depends what you're looking for. If you want conditioning and enjoy hardcore go for a more sport oriented style like mine or boxing. If you like more "inner-self" type of stuff try a traditional style. I loved both styles I took. After all, learning how to jump, spin and kick your foot is pretty damn cool!

    Uh, dude?

    That just sounds, um, GAY.

Stay away from my ninjalicious ass, thanks.

To keep things on-topic, I have studied some shotokan and also attempted some tae kwon do.

Why: Balance and flexibility to add to my strength.

The subject of Martial Arts seems to be quite popular in this forum.
I studied Tae Kwon Do and Seikido, also did gymnastics for a few years. To answer your question Jock, I studied because I watched a lot of Jean Claude Van Damme movies and wanted to do that huge spinning round house kick in the air he does. Not joking. That's the main reason. I never studied Martial Arts because I wanted to be able to kick someone's ass. I lift weights for that. I studied because I thought it was impressive looking.

Jock, are you thinking of taking something? Since you're already lifting, you'd probably do well in grappling because you strength.
