why is alcohol so bad for you when your cutting or on a diet? surely it isn't that high in calories.
carbs
Alcohol is 7 kcal/g if I remember correctly. Those calories aren't really beneficial to body functions either (dys, maybe).
The carbs arent really the problem. Most light beers range from only 3-5 carbs.Originally posted by tudmuf2b

carbs + raises estrogen levels..
this is why guys fight and get horny when drunk.. because their body is trying to bring the testosterone back up

Alchohol dehydrates you and compromises your immune system when abused. You will have to define a abuse on your own.
sometimes slowly
My stats:
Age - 43
ht - 5' - 7"

does this also apply to stuff like red wine? the empty calories that is.
i thought all beers (lite or whatever) have a minimum of 100 carbs (but then again I could be wrong).
I would guess that alcohol lowers your metabolism - which would slow the fat burning process for those who are cutting. Any thoughts on this?
what about spirits ... when i go out i usully have a couple of pints .. 2-3 and 5 or 6 shots of after shock, depending on the thickness of my wallet![]()

Oh jebus, not even close, most light beers have ~100-110 CALORIES, some from carbs, some from the alcohol itself.Originally posted by tudmuf2b

thanks for all the replies guys
I remember reading somewhere that wines, spirits and beer are all very similar.
Light beer sounds like the best solution to me.
The REAL problem is that alcholol eliminates the vitamin B that is in your body. Which is an essential element in building muscles.
A day of drinking probably kills 2 days worth of vitamin B. So the day after a binge you should be taking supplements of B. And if your not binging then why drink at all? *grin*
Alcohol has even been shown to reduce muscle synthesis.
Alcohol is basically pure sugar. Hence why diabetics shouldn't go near the stuff. IOW it is a high GI food.
Drinking alcohol is followed by a sugar crash, which will make you eat more, ad nauseum. I can't stop eating once I have a glass of wine and I've been cutting for any more than a few days.
Amstel Light is one of the lowest calorie beers. 20 per 100ml I think, most beers are up around 40 cal/100ml.
Because alcohol eats up the B complex is that why it's considered a depressant?
Thanks
-Chris
no its considered a depressant cuz it slows brain and muscle activity.
how catabolic is alcohol?
also how do you guys party for hours without going shiat catabolic cuz most clubs have you leave all yer stuff behind... cant really bring food.

Alcohol, the only reason I am not built like the hulk. It is hard living a social college life and lift, that is why I train twice as hard during the summer.
I drink once every bunch of weeks or so.... and never enough to get really smashed...
carbs can be a problem in alcahol.
a beer may only have 3 grams of carbs per 100mls.
but after 8 pints that like 134 grams of carbs. it does add up.
though the alcohol kcla level is worse than carbs.
my exprience - joined gym 10 years ago, 6 1/2 years hard weight training exprience.
You'd have to drink 17 (12) oz miller lite beers to exceed the carbs in 1 Burger King Whopper.
"What mean expendable, Rambo?", Julia Nickson-Soul as Co Bao, in Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)
"this would be an excellent forum, for him", Shelley Long as Diane Chambers in the TV sitcom "Cheers" (1982-1993)

Psst...regular 12fl oz. beer has 146 calories and 36 grams of carbs...and two grams protein, hahaha.
3 1/2 fl oz. of red wine - 74 calories and only 10 grams of carbs.
Like runt mentioned, alcohol dehydrates you therefore decreasing protein synthesis. See, your body is like 60% water...so if you're dehydrated your body won't grow, you won't build muscle. Not only does alcohol increase estrogen, but it also decreases testosterone. Gregz, how much do you drink anyways?

The beer must be non-alcoholic.Originally posted by TripleP

36 carbs * 4 cals = 144 cals
Most of the cals that come from alcoholic beverages are derived from the alcohol itself (~7 calories per gram), not carbs.
Thanks for clearing it up, Bradley, a.k.a. the diet guru
I don't even drink, that information I posted was from my 9th grade health class, lol.

Wine increases your appetite?
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...&dopt=Abstract
"Overall, these results suggest that alcohol has a complex action on appetite, which includes some form of appetite stimulation, and this may explain the excess energy intake reported previously in moderate alcohol consumers."
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...&dopt=Abstract
"Total energy intake (including energy from alcohol) was enhanced in the alcohol condition by 30%, suggesting that energy from alcohol is not compensated in the short-term and may even have a stimulatory effect on food intake."
