So I'm doing a routine Wendler recently posted on another website, and day 3, Friday, looks like this:
Friday
Exercise Sets Reps
A Front squat 3 5/3/1
B Press 3 5/3/1
C Rows 3 10
D DB press 3 10
E 4-Way neck 3
F Sit-ups 3 20
My question is, does exercise D (DB press) refer to DB bench presses or DB overhead presses? I have to do this workout in about 3 hours, so a speedy response will be appreciated!

It's a little late for you now. What did you end up doing?
I believe it is Dumbbell Press (overhead). Why? On the bench day he has you do more chest/tri assistance work--dips. So my guess is more work for the delts on the overhead press day. He's a big fan of pressing, so to me this makes the most sense.
When I hear DB Press I usually think of Flat Bench using DB's, and when Jim Wendler says "Press" I usually think of standing military press. My guess is the following:
A = Front Squat
B = Standing Military Press
C = Bent Over Rows
D = DB Bench Press
E = Neck
F = Sit Up's
Just a guess...

Given that its a 5/3/1 of overhead pressing, it would make way more sense that the db press is overhead in a different rep range. I'd think you'd do a similar thing on a 5/3/1 benchpress day.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I've been told Wendler meant DB bench presses, but here's the whole routine if it'll help:
Monday
Exercise Sets Reps
A Squat 3 5/3/1
B Bench press 3 5/3/1
C Dips 3
D Chin-ups 3
E 4-Way neck 3
F Sit-ups 3 20
Wednesday
Exercise Sets Reps
A Power clean 3 5/3/1
B Deadlift 3 5/3/1
C Incline press 3 10
D Barbell curls 3 10
E Back extensions 3 20
Friday
Exercise Sets Reps
A Front squat 3 5/3/1
B Press 3 5/3/1
C Rows 3 10
D DB press 3 10
E 4-Way neck 3
F Sit-ups 3 20
Since I don't have a neck machine, I usually do a trap/delt exercise in place of it: face pulls, upright rows, or db overhead presses. I think that gets enough shoulder work in.

I honestly don't think it matters. Just pick one. The shoulders are a small muscle anyways. I can also see Wendler laughing about splitting hairs over something like that![]()
