Hey board, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative colitis, meaning im bleeding terribly during my #2's. the last 3 inches of my colon is wrecked.... the doc said to go on a low resolution diet... which i dont know how i can do with the protein i need to consume. I did go gluten free...
But my main concern is the Prednisone he put me on... I'm supposed to take 6 pills for a month and taper... I'm very concerned with this, due to it being a catabolic steriod and known to break down EVERYTHING in your body... bones, muscle, ect....
Please does anyone have any advice?? Is lifting pointless while on this medication???
I hope someone out there has experience with prednisone.

Have you reached out to John Meadows? Given his medical history he might have some good input for you.

Prednisone can definitely make it tough, but if you don't train, I think that would really allow you to suffer its potential side effects of weight gain and such.
Now if the prednisone fatigues you, you might cut back or have to train wiser. But, with your level of experience, I'd think you could balance that well. By training at some level on the treatment, it will be easier to come back when you are off the stuff.
Zar - this is a tough one bud. There is no magic bullet for this..man I wish there was. I had a vascular disease, but since it was bad enough to almost kill me, I certainly took alot if interest in anything bowel related. I have alot of friends who had tried everything under the sun, in terms of asacol, pred, naturopath treatment etc. Their results are all over the place. The only thing I can tell you that helps, is trying to be stress free, as stress seems to drive inflammation, and be really careful with your diet. Anything that bothers you...take it out. Some of my friends ended up having sections removed from their colon, some (like me) had their entire colon removed, and some still fight this all the time. i wish I could promise a magic bullet, but unfortunately there isn't one my friend.

My daughter has the same thing, she is only 18. Mountaindog is right on the money. she has to really watch her diet, and stress definitely makes the situation worse, so try not to stress too much. I know, easy for me to say. Hang tough, and stay strong. wish you the best.
thank you for the advice and support guys. I fight it, but not without being smart about it. Im more mentally thrown off than physically... Questions like, Im a lactose intolerant, do i have celiacs disease.. I'm going to push my limits though... i dont know how else to be.

JM posted above (mountaindog1).
Watch out for interactions with other drugs since it's metabolised by the liver.
You're right though, the drug will shut down you axis so I would do what guys like Belial recommend PCT, just continue training but listen to your body.
Prednisone is usually reserved for severe and refractory disease though, it's usually 3rd line treatment. But man, all the meds do suck for side effects.
my n00b journal
they put me on mesalamine first, but all my symptoms got worse... said i might be allergic to it. so prednisone was a last resort. I've been on for a week now and things are healling. Im training as hard as normal just not thinking about being on the preds anymore... just not letting it distract me anymore....
Im more concerned on the diet now. Eliminating lactose and sugars is going to be one of the hardest things for me. I have so much whey everyday.

I would consider swapping volume for intensity... you're recovery capacity will be greatly lowered on pred... and your diet is so important with pred and UC.... good luck man.
