Question for the ladies of WBB

My g/f works out with me - and she is trying to figure out what method to use...

She can either do what I do:

2-3 sets, 9-11 reps each, with weight as high as I can get it to complete sets.

    Or what ladies mags recommend:
1-2 sets, 10-15 reps each, with weight that they are comfortable with

    or something inbetween.

Rumors and myths are an issue - she wants to gain muscle, but not get all "lumpy and big" -- she wants to be tone...

Now, I have read that women working with heavier weights will not get bulky unless they are using gear... they just dont have enough testosterone...

    Anyhow - opinions and input??

I would highly recommend training exactly like a guy would.
Just form my own personal experience, when I started falling prey to all the high rep for toning and females crap, I got in worse shape and am now trying to get back to lifting real weights again.

I definitely don't think a female is going to get all huge and bulky unless she eats wrong for her goals.

I agree with Savannah. If she eats clean and lifts heavy, the fat, if she has any will fall off. If she's already slender, it will just make her look better.

I'm not a gal, but I'm really beginning to realize how extremely difficult it is to bulk up. Folks who think you lift a little weight and you'll look like the michelin tire man in a few weeks haven't been to the gym.

Have her work out like the guys do and she's very unlikely to start looking like a bag of rocks. She'll probably look AND feel great. This article (authored by a woman) says it pretty well, I think.

Yeah, I always laugh at women that say they don't want to get "all big and muscular" like 2 months of hard lifting is going to make them into what took Cinzia Sensi 2 years to accomplish.

She should basically do your workout, maybe more reps at lower weight (like sets of 10) until she gets used to it (remember how much your arms hurt the 2nd day after you started lifting?).

Now, if I can just convince my girlfriend that she needs to do that...
Now in pain, only working out the walking sticks.

    I'm ok now.

Have her train like a guy. Muscle is muscle whether its on a female or male. She won't bulk up. If she still thinks she will, dare her to try. And we'll see.

Ladies mags for lifting and most nutrition advice=bullsh*t. Stay away.

Heavy weight=good. She can lift light weights if she likes, but it'll take her a hell of a lot longer to see some results. And strength is a great thing to have, not only for various daily life activities, but even for self respect and confidence. So don't let her wimp out on herself. With good form, warmup, and steady progression, she can get into the big leagues of weights (among women anyway) and look and feel fantastic without injury, bulking up, growing chest hair, etc.

No such thing as toning. Please for the love of somethingorother, explain that to her. Muscle grows or atrophies. Fat is gained or lost. "Tone" is really just having decent muscle size and lower body fat. Fastest route to having more tone includes consistent challenging weight training using compound movements like squats, deadlifts, etc.

Focus on the biggest muscles: back, chest, legs, and build her routine around those. None of this Day 1--Legs, Day 2--Ass, Day 3--Triceps crap.

    muscle is muscle.

lift the weight, tear the muscle, knit the mucle back.

physiologically, the same thing happens regasrdless of your gender. whethere those muscles get fockin hyooge or not depends on how much testosterone is floating around in your body.

it's jsut that simple. keep your reps low, and your wieghts heavy.

Got my lady on a push pull legs routine, but little change yet.

she tried a while ago then work got in the way, but, for a while doing squats, deads, pullups and bench she was losing loads of weight round her waist very quickly (nice )

Trouble is too much wine and chocolate, and cake, but I'm working on it

Should see the lads in the gym freak when she deadlifts, but she is still convinced she can just aerobercise it off, and I'm working on that too

My workut partners wife is hella strong, damn near supergirl, wonderwoman and all, but she looks like a fitness model.

The girl does 40'sx10-12reps on db incline bench. She can do palms away pullups consectively, as well. This girl is OMG strong and so so fine.

    so so fine.

"If you have a 10-horsepower motor and you subject it to a 12-horsepower load, it will burn out. But when you have a human body that is the equivalent of a 10-horsepower motor and you subject it to a 12-horsepower load, it eventually becomes a 12-horsepower motor."

Is your training partner in better physical condition then you?
