I'm not too sure if piracetam actually worked or if it was placebo. You're supposed to take it with choline, I havent tried that yet and that might be why I didn't notice definite effects. Some people swear by it though.
I like oxiracetam, I buy it every now and then, it's just kinda expensive so I go back and forth with it. I noticed with it that it makes me more "ready to go" and focused during really busy times as opposed to thinking "can I just get a break?" My last semester was really busy and I had physics lab right after work, I noticed when I didn't take it I wasn't really feeling the whole physics thing, but when I did was ready to go.
Focus-XT is awesome, I've used it both for working out and studying. For studying it really puts you in the zone and instead of thinking "I've got so much work to do!" I would just focus on the task on hand, and I also noticed I was able to process things better and faster on most occasions. It's kind of the same with working out. It doesn't make you feel all jacked up like no-xplode or anything, just really puts you in tune with every rep that you do.
Pyritanol, there were times when I was in my engineering physics class and I was that guy that was constantly raising his hand and answering questions, other times when I wasn't so sure whether or not I noticed anything. It's definitely worth trying though, it's regarded at that "grandfather of nootropics", since it's one of the first one researched.
ALCAR, I never really messed around with this too much since it's already in Focus-XT, but my girlfriend got into the bottle and she loves using it for working out. From what I've read, it's also supposed to help with memory and focus too, but I haven't experimented with it enough to say whether or not thats true.
Theres many more too, I just haven't experimented with them yet.
I'm not sure what your motives are, studying, working out, or just all around enhancement. If you want something to help you out only when you need it (working out, studying, reading, etc), definitely try focus-xt. You're supposed to take ALCAR the same way. For the others, they're more of a daily dosage kind of thing, some you have to wait even up to a week to start noticing effects.
Don't think that these things will do the work for you though, I think some people expect that. They're kind of like creatine with lifting: they will definitely enhance your performance, but it's not like you're gonna get all jacked by sitting around and taking it. In other words, with some of them you won't notice anything until you put yourself in a mentally stimulating situation, like doing math problems, playing music, reading, etc.
Do you have any links to Joe Rogan talking about them? Which ones does he take? I'm kind of curious to see what he has to say about them.
Also, check out longecity.com (.org?), most of what I learned about these things is from people talking on those message boards.
