What does just holding weight do?

Say I take a 45lb plate and hold it above my head. Arms fully extended. Do it till can't hold it anymore. Does that work anything really? Thanks

Not much as your arms are locked out and thus the bones are supporting a lot of the load.

    Why do you ask?

Well the military branch I'm looking into they have you hold a lot of stuff above your head. For long periods of time. Maybe my arms won't be locked so what if your just trying to hold the weight up? Actually using muscle?

ummm... no... there is no "branch" of the military that does this... what you may be referring to are the specific careerfields within several branches of the US military - careerfields to include ground forces and what are commonly referred to as special operations forces... if you are joining the latter then you have a LOT more to work on than holding a 45lb plate over your head. Ultimately, this sort of thing is NOT a regular component of any of the basic training which takes place after initial enlistment... so no need to worry about it...

Finally, there are VERY specific physical training (PT) standards for all branches and components of the military...

simply GOOGLE: PT standards for (whatever BRANCH of the military you are interested in, i.e. ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE, MARINES)

What you find in your search is about the ONLY thing you should focus on for fitness if you are serious about joining... good luck...

I'm looking into the SEALs again. I have two friends that have already been there. They are training me as much as they can to prepare me. I know they have to hold logs and rafts over there heads in BUD/s a lot. So that's I was wondering what could help train me for that. Hence why I asked if holding weight works anything.

Yes, US Navy SEALs conduct "log PT" and boat crew exercises... look into those things and train specifically for them... an overhead hold as you suggested is a pretty amateur and I don't think it will get you anywhere... if your friends actually passed BUD/s then they should be a pretty good resource... if they dropped out then don't take them a gospel... not that this forum isn't great but you should probably be spending more time on SOF forums looking into stuff like Scott Sonnon's TACFIT, the morrison system and barefoot fitness... sounds like you've got a long way to go...

If you know you will have to do it then do it. You will build muscular endurance in that particular position.

Not like that's the only thing I'm working on. It was a question I had that I figured could be answered here.

The guy said he would have to hold a lot of stuff overhead, so why not practicing holding things overhead? I do it to help my overhead squat. Locking out is a big strain on the shoulders and traps.
