    Joe Pa's statue taken down!

I am stealing this from somewhere else.

With all that has come to light, a more appropriate measure would have been just to turn it so he was looking away.

Yahoo is saying multiyear bowl ban and crippling reduction in schollies. I think they need the death penalty. The school should be stepping up here and not waiting for the NCAA to lay down the law, but I'm sure they are afraid of the backlash from alum.

I don't really think the death penalty is necessary here. Criminal charges for all those involved are but the players and the fans don't need to be punished for a corrupt coaching staff/university officials. I guess I just do not see heavy sanctions punishing anyone who is responsible.

I am confident there is a lot we don't know. I agree with NCSULuke though, fans and players shouldn't be punished for what happened. Only time will tell though because the school isn't really taking much action. I was a huge Joe Pa fan and still am.

I don't see how anyone can defend Paterno at this point. I wanted to when this mess first came to light but I just can't do it anymore. I will never understand how anyone who claims to be a man could let little boys get molested and not stand up against it.

The thing that gets me the most, is taking away scholarships from 10 players who did absolutely NOTHING except want to play for one of the top schools in the country. Its fucking stupid. Punish the school, punish the administration, but the players? Seriously? Typical NCAA stupidity right there.

That's not entirely correct. Any player who is currently under scholarship is going to keep his scholarship and does not have to continue to play. Also all the players at Penn State have transfer amnesty, so they can go to another school without penalty. They only 10 scholarships that will be lost are going to be for next year (and subsequent years) so there isn't really any player who will be directly impacted (although there will be 10 less scholarships to give out in all of the NCAA as a result, so those bottom 10 players in the entire crop of high school grads next year won't get one)

This really was the most fair way to penalize the school without seriously harming the futures of the players that are already there.

I'm being thick headed and something isn't clicking for me. A few years back paterno kicked off one of (if not the best) players during that time because he was accused of raping a girl. Paterno didn't even give the kid a chance he said something like "if you've been accused you were doing something you shouldn't have anyway". I don't remember the players name I think he was number 2, and like the 3rd top returner in the nation. I just don't see how something like that could go down, and yet he hide truths and defend sanduskee (sp). IDK, I guess when more info comes to light everyday I'll except what seems to be the truth .

It was Austin Scott and he was later cleared of all charges. He had been in trouble before and that was the last straw. I argued that was a terrible decision at the time with many a Penn State Supporter.

When the stuff with Sandusky first came to light to Paterno based on the reports, PSU was not having very good seasons. Many at the time were calling for Joe's head. Do you think his alleged decisions could have been motivated by self preservation?

I never heard of people wanting him done? I don't live there ofcourse, but have some friends from there (and loyal PSU fans to boot). And not doing good? PSU has been averaging like 9 wins a season for a while right? or do you mean during 92 type year?

Nope. They were terrible in 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2004 record wise. They had a good record in 02, but got beat by Michigan, Iowa, and Auburn in their Bowl Game.

they really have effectively buried the program.

I don't feel like the current players are too effected, although their dream of playing for PSU is ruined, but they are being allowed to transfer without sitting out a season.

I think the NCAA is more punishing the school for not bringing to light the situation much much earlier.

Any one notice how all the money is going to organizations that support sexual abuse victims? Found that to be interesting since normally the NCAA just pockets the money.

The level of deception however must have gone much much deeper than anyone perceived.

The NCAA can't bring the legal charges since that's already been done. Sometimes though there are still consequences for mistakes you made in the past when they catch up with you. That's kinda how I see it here. PSU still had to face the music. The organization as a whole made a huge mistake in keeping shadows around Sandusky and what he was doing. The sheer number of victims is just astounding.

It's unfortunate to say the least since it is always disappointing to see a great team and university come crashing down like that but the truth is what it is. Pretending it's anything else is just denial.

Ah. I was thinking more about 2006 or so on. I haven't looked it up, it just seemed like the were always finishing 9 or 10 wins.

Don't forget stripping PSU all wins and related accomplishments since 88? i think. Basically cut the programs total wins in half. ESPN says this is the new death penalty, and we all know how SMU bounced back from theirs......

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd love to go find the landfill where they dumped that statue. I wager it would be worth a pretty penny to some hardcore Paterno fans.
