How many of you have never been to or swam in the ocean? Would you jump in if you were there for the first time?
I was thinking about this today. In the crossfit games there have been a couple of athletes who trained all year and when it came down to the first event in the ocean, they would not get in.
I live in California so I've been going to the beach my whole life. I can't quite understand the intense fear people have of it.
However, if I were on a boat out to sea, with no land in sight, there would be no way in hell i'd get into that water. The things that could be swimming around underneath me has a huge fear factor.

The first time I went for an ocean swim, I nearly drowned. I love it.
Fuck, fight, or hold the light.
I was a very good swimmer - Division 1 on a team w. many All-Americans and a world record holder.
We had a training camp in Florida one year. Our team did an open water race w. other teams - it is a totally different ball game to swim in the ocean vs. in a pool where you can see everything around you. During the swim, I ran into a clump of kelp and freaked out. Also, I went off course and ended up by myself unable to see the shore - luckily, I had some idea which direction to go otherwise I would have been screwed.
Just a whole different ball of wax. Being a competent swimmer helps, but it takes more than that to be any good at it.
A child does not learn to squat from the top down. In other words, he does not suddenly make a conscious decision one day to squat. Actually, he is squatting one day and make the conscious decision to stand. Squatting precedes standing in the developmental sequence. This is the way a child's brain learns to use the body as the child develops movement patterns. Therefore, a child is probably crawling, rocks back into a squatting position with the back completely relaxed and the hips completely flexed, and stands when he has enough hip strength. This approach makes a lot of sense and can be applied to relearning the deep squat movement if it is lost. -Gray Cook

One of the toughest thing in tri training.
It IS a different beast- currents, jellyfish... but really, out of all the pain and shit people deal with, this is the thing that holds them back?
Few tips- learn to snorkel, spend some time under the water, demystify it. Once you know that all that's really under there are brightly colored aquarium fish (believe me, I wish I saw more sharks scuba diving), the fear evaporates.

Oh, and learn to sight- pop your head out of the water, get your bearings...

I went to the Atlantic during an internship two summers ago. First thing I did was sprint into the water and swim for like 5 minutes (hey, that's a long time) and it was epic. Granted, I was only 30 yards from the shore, not in the middle of the ocean. It was a seriously awesome experience and so much more different than swimming in a lap pool, lol.

How about this for a scare...
Visited the pacific ocean (Newport Beach,CA) last week. A shark swam past me. Granted, it was very small, but a shark nonetheless.
