I thought I would give GVT a try for a 5-6 week run. I tried chest/back yesterday, but couldn't get the 100 reps (10x10) on bench or barbell row. I have a 1RM of 335, so I tried 180lbs for a 10X10. I got 58 reps and failed, then pushed out 2 more singles real quick. I got to 70 reps on the BB row before failing. So what now? Should I drop the weight next week, or try it again at the same weight? Should I complete the remaining sets for max reps if I can't get them all, and keep at it until I get the 10x10? Then progress?
I'm just not sure how to proceed. Oh, I'm 42yrs old, I've been lifting seriously for the last 12 years, but I've been lifting since I was about 17, although not so seriously back then.

personally, the only time I would use this would be towards the end of a cycle where I had a deload set up and had time to recover from going to failure over and over.

I've used it ~~~ and it has worked for me. One thing I think it does is improve your general fitness level, as a part of this is a simple fitness exercise ~~~ and eventually your working weight will be within 25 - 30% of your max effort....
Personally, I think that getting the weights "right" is the early trick in this program, because you're working with something akin to "warm-up sets" that become taxing in the end ~ it's tempting to load too much on the bar initially, but the volume is where the heart of the GVT program is: lots of CNS stress going on.....
My thought on your question about what to do with 5 sets of 10 and 1 set of 8 is to get to the core of the program, and drop the weights down at least to 160 lbs (down 20 lbs) and see if you can get the 10x10 with that weight ~ then work up from there. If you can't get the 10x10 at 160 then keep cutting the weight back until you can get it.

GVT has a million problems that have been addressed in depth. Look up Advanced German Volume Training, or one of the "modern" versions. You'll be much better off.

Here's an article that addresses some of them, from the guy that wrote the original GVT article in Muscle Media....
