Anyone have any ideas or experience with this? I was thinking just a PVC pipe and buy some sand papery grip tape and wrap it around it. Think PVC is tough enough? I'm only around 180. Not sure how to go about hanging it from the basement ceiling though, any ideas there?

Maybe try finding some rope to secure into a support downstairs in two spots a couple feet apart to hang it. If the PVC doesn't hold try filling it will concrete. You can get mix for dirt cheap. Never tried but just a suggestion if you can't find a stronger bar. Using a towel to drape through the ropes could work until you find a sturdier bar. Or even a smaller PVC pipe in a bigger PVC pipe to reinforce it.
Any overhead space in your basement? How bout using some 'j' hooks and attaching them to straight metal brackets and then use a piece of wooden dowel or a metal rod and suspend it inside the 'j' hooks. I have a similar setup in my house.
Are the beams exposed or is there a ceiling? If they're exposed I'd get some rings and like others said, just have a hanging bar using chains or rope.

PVC might be strong enough, but I went with pipe, chain, and tie-downs. I've been using it fairly regularly for at least a few years now. Just in case anyone is wondering, I don't do kipping pull-ups and wouldn't even consider doing that with a home set up.

A child does not learn to squat from the top down. In other words, he does not suddenly make a conscious decision one day to squat. Actually, he is squatting one day and make the conscious decision to stand. Squatting precedes standing in the developmental sequence. This is the way a child's brain learns to use the body as the child develops movement patterns. Therefore, a child is probably crawling, rocks back into a squatting position with the back completely relaxed and the hips completely flexed, and stands when he has enough hip strength. This approach makes a lot of sense and can be applied to relearning the deep squat movement if it is lost. -Gray Cook

Beams are exposed. Thanks for all the ideas guys. Dropped the PVC idea and picked up a steel bar like Sensei's. For a quick setup right now I'm putting it through two 2x4"s with 1" holes for the bar to go through. I will most likely do a J or eye hook setup later with individual hand grips or rings to add some versatility.
