Has anyone heard of Dave Asprey, better know as the Bulletproof Executive? He was on the Joe Rogan podcast this week and made a ton of outlandish claims. He runs the website www.bulletproofexec.com and describes himself as a "bio-hacker who takes self-quantification to the extreme of self-experimentation." Apparently he has spent $250,000 on experiments where he is the guinea pig and claims he has ">20 IQ points, lowered his biological age, and lost 100 lbs without using calories or exercise." He is a big proponent of avoiding grains completely, eating a ton of grass-fed beef, a lot of grass-fed butter and saturated fats, and states that calories have zero effect on weight. He even claims that when he was in his late teens he would eat under 2000 calories a day, exercise 6 days a week for an hour and a half each time and still weighed 300+ pounds. Then he started eating 4500 calories per day and stopped exercising and all of a sudden lost 100 pounds and got a six pack. This was due to eating the "right" foods like saturated fat. Anyway I'm not educated enough to refute his outlandish claims but I would appreciate if you guys could check out his website, watch some of his videos and comment. Thanks guys.
This is the dumbest shit I have ever seen. I can't even begin on this. I read through his first portion on losing 100 pounds, and every single claim he cites is a single mechanism taken wildly out of context. I mean, his first citation on cereal grains links to an article that doesn't say "Avoid them", but simply points out that substituting homogenous foods with low nutrient density for a variety of foods can result in certain nutrient deficiencies. Yet this is part of his rationale for avoiding all grains.
It's bro science... the entire thing. The entire god damn website. I have never seen a more carefully constructed pile of bullshit in my life.
For grins, I'm reading comments. Every time he gets called out, he basically states "You haven't read the literature". Great defense. "You're wrong because I know more".
Wow.
Just, wow..

Because they need an example for their "scams 101" courses?

Alex you are literally my hero. I've always respected your level of knowledge and athleticism but this guy honestly had me stressed out. I'm in pretty good shape but I thought maybe I was going about everything incorrectly, especially my diet. Anyway glad you confirmed this guy is full of it, now I can put his bullshit out of my mind and focus on proven principles.

Everyone is trying to make a buck on the Gary Taubes bandwagon (especially Gary Taubes).
People really love this stuff for some reason. It really resonates.
I've followed a few "paleo diet" type discussions on various discussion boards and the "disciples" have a near religious fervor for their new messiah.

HAHAHAHAHA, oh my god, the ONE paper he has backing the use of oxaloacetate as a "caloric restriction mimetic" was conducted by, and I quote:
"Author A. Cash is an officer in a commercial venture
involving calorie restriction mimetics, including the sales
of oxaloacetic acid supplemented with vitamin C as
“benaGeneTM"
Gee. That's not a conflict of interest. Never mind the fact that the "paper" itself does not have a SINGLE peer reviewed clinical study backing any claims, except a single case of a heavily medicated elderly woman who supplemented with the compound and showed some decrease in free glucose levels etc. The remainder of the paper talks about some mechanisms noted in rodent studies, and little else.
This is the worst shit I have ever seen. Who is this moron?

Good thing he's bulletproof, because anybody profiting off of snowing the uninformed should probably be shot.
Though I suppose good on him for turning bullshit into gold. I guess you CAN polish a turd.

Generally, if you read a piece of advice on the internet, assume it's wrong until proven otherwise. This applies especially to "conventional wisdom". -Belial
Alarm bells started ringing while reading Dave Asprey's response to Dr. Ornish's recommendations, in which he contradicts himself and grossly misstates truth to the point that it is hard not to believe that it is unintentional:
" it appears that Steve Jobs was using the Dr. Dean Ornish Cancer Diet, which is almost a mirror image of the Bulletproof Diet. In case you haven’t heard of him, Dean Ornish, MD, author of “Eat More, Weigh Less,” is one of the leaders of a small group of radical physicians who tout incredibly low fat diets with strict avoidance of (healthy) saturated fats as the path to health, despite years of research showing how misguided that is."
Again - Mr. Bulletproof says Dr. Ornish's diet is "almost a mirror image of the Bulletproof Diet," but spends the rest of the article stating why Dr. Ornish is "misguided"? Odd.
If that wasn't confusing enough - later in the article he states that "My own experience on a low fat, low calorie diet was disastrous – it helped me reach 300 lbs."
Not to be insensitive, but if this is true, I think there are some very thin people in Africa who would like to hear him speak on the topic.
Did anyone notice Mr. Asprey's (pronounced Ass-spray?) photo? ...the one with the electrodes attached to his temples? Ha!

He's a buddy of mine with two PhDs (biochemistry and nutrition) who's authored/coauthored nearly fifty papers on nutrition in developing countries. Bright guy. Kind of hilarious.

He's got more patience than I do, I can say that much. I'm also laughing at the guy who told him to try it. My friend's done an ultraman (double Ironman), I sincerely doubt he needs to start following the "bulletproof" diet.
