When using a bench shirt the belt helps keep the shirt in place. There is no need for one for raw benching unless you are like me and have a herniated navel so you like to always wear one.
I have found I feel tighter with my belt on while benching raw, which gave me a certain level of confidence while lifting. Now with that being said, I wear a bodybuilding belt at all times now while training.
