make/find a ms dos boot disk

    make sure it works.

backup on cd or whatever, any files you still want like mp3s or documents.

if you dont have a win98 cd, get one

use the bootdisk, goto msdos and type

    format c:

after thats done, put in the win98 cd and reboot.

start your comp with cd rom support, at dos prompt type
d: (or whatever your cdrom drive is)
    then
    setup

    follow the instructions

Make sure all of your important files are saved (CD-Burner, Zip Drive).

There are two ways you can do it.
    1. Assuming you can boot from CD-ROM.
-Cold Boot your computer and enter the BIOS (The screen will tell you what button to press to enter setup).
-Set your Boot Devices to read CD-ROM, C, A
-Place the Win98 disk in the cd rom
-Save the BIOS changes and exit.
    -Follow directions on the screen.

    2. If your computer WON'T BOOT from CD-ROM, then you need a Win98 boot disk. You can probably download the files for one from the internet and put it on a floppy. Then just stick the floppy disk in and reboot and it should pick it up with the same setup as the first method.

you format your HD and install win98SE.

    hehe.

    but seriously.. here:

    get a windows 98 cd-rom boot disk

stick it in your computer, put the 98SE cd in, and restart

select start the computer with cd-rom support

once you're at the c:\ prompt type: format c:\ /u

after you're done go ahead and get into the cd directory.. try cd e:\, cd f:\, cd g:\, etc.. and basically after you type one of'em type dir <enter> and see if it displays the win98 cd contents.. you'll know its win98 once you see the Win98 folder..

once you found the correct drive letter, type cd win98

    then type setup

go through the setup and bam - you're done before you know it.

btw imho xt is a worthless piece of ****. go for the following in that exact order:

    windows 2000
    windows 98 SECOND EDITION
windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6
    windows 98

i wouldn't recommend anything else from Microsoft.. if you are considering alternatives, check out Lindows, Unix, Linux, and Mac.

    thank you, come again.

what is the processor speed and how much RAM do you have ? did the system come w/ XP Pro installed ?

you would do much better with Win 2K Professional vs. 98 SE

yet 2k is better than 98 IMO for the things i use it for...

however win98se has pretty much 100% capability with all the games.. win2k doesn't.

win98 also has less services at startup.. win2k has more..

it all depends what you use the comp for.. but in either way stay away from XP - i think its the devil's software..
