    Smokeless Tobacco

    Hey guys,

What effects do you think dip would have on physical fitness? What if it's done rarely, as in very small quantities. Whenever I have a serious golf tournament, or match, I find it to be relaxing. Help appreciated.

You're breathing in more carcinogens in that LA county air than you will be putting into your body with that ******* tobacco, man.

I wouldnt worry about it if its done rarely. If you dip a can a day, I'd start worrying about the effects of nicotine and all that. But I do think that the pure tobacco brands are better for you, nominally, because some brands have fiberglass and **** in there to get the nicotine into your lip faster. Or so I hear.

True... a little Cope will chew up your lip right good! Believe me, I once was one of those guys that'd go through a can a day - never of Cope, but skoal wintergreen. If you're doing it rarely, I wouldn't worry about it.

PS: Quick fact - that "average" size dip has the same amount of chemicals as 35 cigarettes. You just don't inhale them, they mostly stay in your mouth. Yummy, eh? That's why I quit!!!!

    Hey~

I know that the carcinogens in tobacco affect cells in the mouth quite quickly. In a health class, we've seen pre-cancerous effects of oral cells after just one dip application. Also, the nicotine in tobacco is a stimulant, and it does cause the constriction of blood vessels in the body, but especially in extremidies. This is why tobacco users often have problems with cold fingers and toes. Also, this is why tobacco users develop more-severe wrinkles at an earlier age than others--less blood flow/oxygen to the layers of the skin.

With that said, some people smoke a pack a day for their whole lives and eat bacon for breakfast and never get cancer; others exercise and eat properly and get cancer; however, I would find other ways to relax, such as breathing techniques or developing the mental strenghth to calm your body down.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the info Mike, appreciate it.

But please, come on, we INVENTED smog in Southern California, when I go out of town, I don't look for an oxygen bar, I look for a smog bar where I can calm my mind with dangerous chemicals of the internal combustion engine. Ahhhhhh.

Bacon is the number three cause of lung cancer in American males, right behind cigarettes and wives.

true... but people get killed by cars, and noone would deliberately walk in front of one cos 'it will happen anyway'.

also nicotine does not relax you (as stated, its a stimulant, not a depressent), it simply relieves the mental withdrawal symptoms. avoid at all costs.

Smoking is the worst habit a person can have as it is not only affecting the person but also affecting people around. There are a lot of problems associated with smoking which people face like problem with respiratory system, heart and many more. No doubt that getting over this habit is very tough as craving for nicotine keeps coming back. But the most important thing to get over it is will power. When you feel craving the most try having a glass of water. Best luck to all those who want to give up smoking.

Nicotine decreases hydration to vertebral discs, therefore increasing the risk of herniations at any level (cervical/thoracic/lumbar). I wouldn't recommend nicotine intake of any amount if you're a regular lifter.
    I know you're half-crazy, but I wish you'd go all the way.

Fiberglass...ahahahahahahaha I can only imagine the pain I'd be in if there was actually fiberglass in dip. Dipping like you say you do won't do anything negative...hell, it might even give you a buzz.

Cancerous effects after "one application of dipping tobacco"? Was your health class sponsored by those truth people? Its tobacco not nuclear radiation...

The fiberglass thing is a myth.
One known mechanism is that nicotine inteferes with cancer-combating protein p53. So yes, under one application is it possible to have "pre-cancerous" effects. You really should read up on cancer and the mechanisms behind it before you bash others claims.

Deactivating the p53 gene will not cause cancer...there are multiple genes that have to be screwed up for cancer to happen, including p53. Don't remember the names. All I know is the gene that controls apoptosis as well as the telomerase thing in the cell has to be screwed up in addition to p53. Go look up what you're talking about before you tell me too...and fyi I did read up on cancer, I could go bust out my textbooks if you want me to be specific. Although I'm not positive if I still have my bio book...

Edit - to the thread starter, if you're looking for a healthier alternative you could try real swedish snus. Not that stuff camel or marlboro sell, they don't disclose their manufacturing processes. It won't bother you're gums as much and its significantly lower in TSNAs, which are cancer causing chemicals in tobacco...

I didn't say deactivating the p53 gene would cause cancer, I was simply agreeing with the claim that nicotine can cause "pre-cancerous effects", one of which would be interfering with appropriate p53 function.
When you say 2 genes you are probably referring to the 2 gene classes that are related to cancer proliferation, tumor supressing genes, and oncogenes.
You are trying to make things seem more simple than they are.
