Which exercise do you think is the BEST all around strength movement?
Bench seems to be what everyone THINKS it is. But I have known quite a few guys who had a good bench but were scrawny, and weak as hell.
What do you guys think?
Deadlifts?

Wow, never thought an Olympic movement would come up. That exercise is a B*TCH. I used to do them for football, I think that my personal best ever was something like 185..![]()
Strength is a subjective term. Too hard to measure one's "strength" with 1 exercise IMO. Much better to take a wholistic approach and look at all lifts.

maybe running with weights in your hands?!?!

Well, people seem to put up the most weight on squats. Chuck Voegelpohl at Westside weighs 220 and puts up a 1075 squat.
But I agree with the idea that no one lift can be the judge. That's why I like the powerlifting stuff. Let the 3 lifts speak for you.
Squat are good, but you need more then one!

Handstand push-ups under an extended vertical leg press machine while extending the legs at the end are my favorite.

Snatch? I would think it would be an olymipic lift. Hard to measure ones strenght just by one lift.

standing military press would be the best test of ones strength IMO. especilay since it brings practicly every muscle in your body into play
deadlift or clean & jerk are clear winners
I would say either the deadlift or the SOHP, so I'll combine them and agree that it's the clean & jerk, hands down.
Sure you gotta be strong to pick the weight up off the floor but to pick it up and put it over you head. Now that's strength.
clean & jerk

Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
Clean & Jerk is the best overall power movement by far. I can't think of a muscle group that isn't somehow used in that movement when it's done correctly.

Personal Bests:
Bench 355
Squat 505
Deadlift 560
Clean & jerk (snatch too, for that matter) involves far too much technique to be a measure of absolute brute strength, in my opinion. A much 'weaker' lifter with superior technique can easily out C&J a stronger one with poor form and no knowledge of how to do the lift.
Deadlift has technique involved as well, but, well, look at the poundages people often do their first time trying them. Trained lifters can often pull 4 plates or more their first time out. On the other hand, being able to C&J a 'good' amount may take months of practice.

Can't go with Olympic movements on this one, too techincal. It is very difficult for even an athletic, and weight trained person to put up any kind of numbers at all in clean and jerk.
Bench is definately out. No legs involved.
Deadlift is a good choice, except for the fact that a very skinny relatively weak person with long arms and legs and a short torso will very often outlift by a large amount, a squattier person with a bigger torso, and relatively short arms and legs.
Now this thicker person may outdo that skinny guy in every other lift imaginable, but be a poor deadlifter because of his build.
So really, I don't think there is any just single lift out there that you can point to as the definitive test for overall body strength. Strength is made up of many different things. Some are great pullers, some are great pressers, while some can walk a long ways carrying heavy objects. Just different.
