    Tanning!

I'm a natrually very pale bitch, more pale than most people, and the worst thing is i live in the UK, and unfortunately one cannot get a tan from the rain

Sunbeds are an option, but (1) What are the risks of getting cancer etc. from it? (I suffer from some mild acne sometimes) and (2) If you get a tan purely from a sunbed dont you go all orange like a carrot?

Another option is tanning lotion, but im not sure, id be pale one day, the next day I come in for work and my mates notice i have a nice tan from nowhere, would be kinda obvious/embarrasing

I just want slightly tanned skin, I dont expect to look amazingly tanned. Looking normal/slightly tanned would be great! Ideas?

I'm in the same boat as you. I am very pale. Very very pale. Is there anybody on here that is naturally pale that can get a tan and keep it without staying burnt the whole time. I don't really tan, I just burn but I was wondering if eventually it can turn into a tan.

OK, I used to work for a tannning salon. It is possible for ANYONE to get tan. the key to getting tan and not burnt when pale is just going at a slow pace. Most people try to rush it and then they burn. If you go to a salon. Start out on the beds for 7-8 mins. Move up maybe a min or two each week or as you feel fit. By the time you know it you will have a safer, decent tan.

Tanning wil not turn you carrott orange if you only want a little color. it will also be subtle, and not overnight. Yes it might ACTUALLY help with acne problems. Even if you burn you will tan over time, because consistant low exposure over time will change the skin.

I am one of those pale people and yes I do tan, take it slow and be patient. It's kind of like working out, your not going to see results overnight like you want.

Hear, hear! If I go outdoors to do anything, let alone tan, I burn, then I peel, then I'm pale, then I burn, then I peel, then I'm pale.

I don't use one of those hippy tanning beds. Hrmph.

Of course, I also leave all of the lights off in my room/house until it's fully dark outside, then I turn them on one by one depending upon what is needed.

Don't use sunblock in a bed. lol. You won't get anywhere with spf45. Just start out at a few minutes and work up.. the quality of tan from a bed is the same as from the sun itself. Melanin is melanin.

To help cure peeling: Hydrocortizone cream and aloe. A lot of the time, people who don't tan actually have mild allergic reactions to the sun... I used to be like that, and I still have very sensitive skin on my upper thighs. But after tanning, a few days of hydrocortizone and they start to turn tan (and don't burn/peel).

Hmmm... so most of you use sunbeds.

Is there any real risk of getting cancer from use of them every so often? Thats pretty much the only thing holding me back.

HomeYield: I feel your pain, but I find using just the right level of sunblock you can get a reasonably nice tan over time, its very hard not to just burn though.

Celestial: Yeh, I just want a "natural" skin tone, I dont want to have the kind of tan where people actually notice and would ask if i've been on holiday or something

I personally use a tan bed and i like it. I did have a slight prob with burnt butt but allie helped me with that and no more burn.
Different tanning products give different effects and dont try and use them interchangeably(did i spell that right?) I believe there are lotions just for tanning beds and lotions for direct sun exposure. Work your way up in exposure in the tan bed and ask lots of questions. Right now im using blacktea tanning product with great results.

a tanning booth is not gonna do anything the sun isnt, the only difference is that its a concentrated amount in a short amount of time. If you burn easily, its prob best to start out with the booth and work your way up to a base tan and then start tanning outside. USE SUNSCREEN OUTDOORS!!

I bringing this back up because I'm wondering about how often one should go to the tanning beds. Every other day, every 3 days, or what?

DANGER? Inherent risk is part of the tanning game.....it dries out your skin....diminishes your eye's abilities to detect minute color differences and IT MAKES your A$$ or any other UV "virgin" body parts itch like CRAZY until they adapt to UV exposure......BUT without a doubt every single person looks more vibrant and alive with a tan (unless you've got the skin of a gator)....my wife talked me into it....and I'm hooked I like having a little tan.....that if depended upon sunshine I would NOT get until JULY.

I get good results with once a week in the offseason

As with Lizzie, I found part of the problem with cheaper/older beds and burning your tush was because your tush is in contact with the bed itself when you lie down in it... you can avoid this part of the problem by seeking out a place with standing-tan bed-thingies. Stand ups usually cost a bit more but they're worth it.

I'm doing a stand up bed now. Pretty neat. Anyway... Because I'm a rather light skinned fella (read: Casper-like) I'm trying to determine my tolerance and build up. Would it benefit me to try maybe twice a week with shorter durations?
