I just received ~50 issues of Musclemag International from the early to late 70s. Let me tell you, some great ****! The magazines, while of much poorer paper and print quality were infinitely better in terms of information disseminated. They are not one big ad like the magazines of today. Another great touch is that they have a section on powerlifting in each issue! This is absolutely as it should be, iron game lovers should be as one! Even powerlifters wouldn't mind more size and shape, and bodybuilders don't mind a little extra strength. Here are a couple of photos, there will be many more to come.

Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
It says he had reportedly lifted over 800, but the photo isn't of that. It also says he could have set records that would still stand today, but he didn't train the deadlift much!Originally posted by HomeYield

People wonder why I call myself Mr. T. One dude asked, 'does the T stand for tough?' I said no. Another dude asked if the T stands for my last name, Tureaud. No it does not. The 'T' in Mr. T stands for tuna. T loves tuna.
Looks like Boyer Coe.Originally posted by Rastaman

We tend to think of Sisyphus as a tragic hero, condemned by the gods to shoulder his rock sweatily up the mountain, and again up the mountain, forever. The truth is that Sisyphus is in love with the rock. He cherishes every roughness and every ounce of it. He talks to it, sings to it. It has become the mysterious Other. He even dreams of it as he sleepwalks upward. Life is unimaginable without it, looming always above him like a huge gray moon. He doesn’t realize that at any moment he is permitted to step aside, let the rock hurtle to the bottom, and go home.
Parables and Portraits, Stephen Mitchell
Blood is right, it is Boyer Coe. He won the amateur Universe that year (Arnold won the pro).
The dude deadlifting is none other than Paul Anderson, he was a FREAK! Many on this site don't know anything about him. He was one of the strongest men who ever lived. He has had some lifts attributed to him that were real, and some that were embellished a bit. First, he did all of his big lifting before steroids were on the scene (in the 50s to early 60s). He was 100% natural. Now, he never did deadlift much because his hands were relatively small and pudgy, he had grip issues. His strength was in pressing and squatting. He lifted with no equipment, no suit, no knee wraps, and usually no belt, nothing! He is reported to have squatted with over 1000 lbs, again, with no equipment! Those of you in the know will have some idea how awesome that is. Brent Mikesell, the current record holder in the squat lifts a little under 1100 lbs, but with every piece of equipment available and using a style which would not be possible without said equipment. Anderson did it with nothing. Now, his depth was probably a tad more shallow, but to do it with no equipment is infinitely more impressive.
The man really is one of the most amazing strength specimens that ever lived!

Paul Anderson is what I want to achieve. Thank you for posting that info about him Chris.
