I lost at least 25 pounds off my deadlift in the past week DESPITE VERY intense training. I attempt a new maximum deadlift every week and do the deadlift exercises only once a week. Is this too often? I am thinking about trying some steriods to try to increase my deadlift max. Can steroids help increase the deadlift?
this is a joke right?
My profile picture is about 5 years old, I'll get around to taking some progress pics eventually.

How often should I attempt a deadlift max? Forget the steriods.
How did you lose 25Ibs. off your deadlift? Did you lose alot of weight or something?

If you have to ask if steroids will help you shouldn't be using them because you obviously don;t understand them. Attempting a max every week is WAY too much. I only deadlift once in a blue moon and when i do it shoots up several pounds (25+) each time i DL. For me the key to a big DL is to not DL.
It depends on the routine. On a west side routine you might work up to your max or 3 rep max 3 weeks in a row, and then you'd change to something like squats for the next 3 weeks...that's about the most often that you'd be maxing out, though. Make sure you wear a belt.Originally posted by TRI

I was only joking about the steriods. Liver cancer from steriod use is something I can do without for now.
I think everyone will be in agreement that you shouldn't use steroids atleast...

You work up to a rep max, but not in a full squat or deadlift. Full squats and deadlifts are rarely attempted in a "normal" Westside routine as I understand it.Originally posted by Bizatch

I think that Dead Lifts can be interchanged with Good Mornings.
i did one yesterday (got a PR 335x1!) i think about 6 weeks ago is the last time i checked.

I do not deny the existence of the deadlift as an exercise. It is just my understanding that max lifts in these two were not attempted very often. Further, when they were attempted, it iss just as a check to see what the new max is and/or find weaknesses. That's just my understanding though.Originally posted by Bizatch

Screw the gear till you reach your potential. And on the other note DO NOT train the deadlift heavey all the time gains will be minamal. Do you one rep max once a month and train it it moderatly every week. Follow this and you will get better pulls for sure.
I went 2 or 3 months of deadlifting once a week, and setting a PR almost every time out. When things start to stall, I just take some time off the lift, and work other lifts such as squats heavier. Then I will try to come back to deadlifts and work back towards my max again.
Because this lift doesn't rely heavily on any one muscle, but is more of a whole body lift, I think that your increase in lift is more a result of becoming mechanically better at the lift than anything else. So you can continue to make progress from week to week, becoming better at the lift, and slowly becoming stronger along the way.

I've been maxing every other week lately with 8-10 reps on the weeks I don't max.
I honestly feel the 8-10 reps much more the next few days as opposed to the max attempts. I know DOMS aren't always an indication of everything, but the 8-10 reps feel like they are more taxing on my body than the maxes.

El P, what you said. Wouldn't that be awfully hard on the CNS, and lead to overtraining it very very quickly?

I agree with this aswell, I feel gains would have been better had you not trained the deadlift consantly heavier. Its way to hard on the body.Originally posted by Behemoth

I seriously doubt you would overtrain with a week in between. On max lifts you aren't lifting a lot of volume, so overtraining probably wouldn't be much of a factor. I am not a big fan of high rep deads anyway, but that's just me. I consider it a strength exercise only, and I treat it as such. I generally don't do sets of more than 5 or 6 ever, and those are usually warmup sets.
I didn't have trouble progressing, and there are many here who can lift as much or more, that have done the same thing. If progress slows down you can always back off for a while.
