Ok first off, I don't want to get flamed because I took a stance against FULLY automatic weapons in a previos thread lol. Although I wouldn't mind having one, I was just stating that I didn't think anyone had a necessity for one....Neways Getting that out of the way, after shooting with my cousins yesterday and shooting a ak-47 for the first time I want a new rifleI want a AR-15 and I checked some out at gunsofamerica.com. Does anyone have experience with these? Should I go used or new, I don't want to spend a grand or more on a new one, I don't think....They had some nice used colts on there, which brand is the best used for say around 6-900

You have to get an AR-15 . I have the short jungle version , nice and small but still accurate easily at 200 to 300 yards . Mine looks like the CAR-15's that special forces carry .
The 223 round is smaller , lighter (you can carry more) and the rifle itself is more ergonomically correct than an AK or just about anything else .
Now lets get to it --- The AR-15 bolt locks to the rear after firing it's last round,so with one hand you can jam another magazine in and smack the side of the reciever to slam the bolt shut (fast easy , one handed )
The shooting hand never leaves the grip when taking it off safe it's a thumb selector switch right there .
The AR has less recoil so your shots in succesion are grouped better also if yours is fully auto or 3 round bursts the thumb selector switch is right there still .
Magazines in the AR are about half the weight , therefore you can carry twice as much... 30 rd to 30 rd
The AK bolt doesn't lock to the rear , you need to use two hands to reload and pull the reciever back
To place the AK off safe you need to take your hand off the firing grip ( this is a pain in the you know what)
The selector switch isn't thumb operated either once again you need to remove your hand off the grip .
I own both and every friend of mine that has ever shot both says hands down the AR-15 is the better rifle
Now ... I like the shortened one better... why? haha I'll tell you first for home defense the normal size is bulky in close quarters, second even out in the field the added accuracy of another 100 yards or so isn't worth it since most of your shooting will be at 200 yards or less and possibly home defense .
I hope that helps . good luck .
Give me your broken , give me your beaten ... I will build them up , I will lead them ... to the threshhold . Make you stronger , make you believe .
Sounds great! How much did you pay for yours? I think I'm going to go with a longer piece just because it looks so bad ass.

You can only legal purchae semi-auto, except for nevada. What do you plan on doing with the gun? The AK-47 is a bigger round. I've seen people use it for deer. .223 is a little on the shy size for deer.
I've seen assault rifle used for aroundf 300 and I've seen them new around 1000-1200. Don't know anything about the models.
I hear if you get the right manufactorer the AK-47 is damn good weapon. I've also heard that it will chamber the .223, but don't know this for a fact. A vet told me though.
I've got a bolt action 7.54x54 that is a killer round. Would not want to fire one in semi-auto, atleast in the gun I got. I got on of those old Russian surplus rifles. I wanted something I didn't care about to keep in the garage.
My friend is a gun dealer so I bought it new for 800 bucks , I doubt you'll find it for that but if you buy a colt you will get your moneys worth . The colt is a better rifle to me but I collect guns so I'll pay more for it . I'm not sure if you would notice the difference in shooting it a couple times but I have about 4000 rounds through mine and not one problem .
I would recommend the shorter version too .For everyday use it's just way better . If the sh*t ever hits the fan the shorter one will be easier to carry and handle in urban situations . If you live in Iowa or something and want to mount a scope go with the long . Don't forget most military and police units are carrying .223 caliber stuff now so if they come to take your guns you can use their ammo after you dispatch them .. tuttut... just kidding .

Brawl do you have a flash suppressor on the 15?

for around the house I like my S&W 586, .357 6". Good feeling gun. I don't like the idea of rifles in the house, carbines so-so. If I am gonna go to length of a long gun gonna go with shotgun and oo. Which is what I have in the hall closet. More for grabbing on my way out the door.
The AK is a bigger round , if you are deer hunting you would want something else anyway . The one aspect the AK is superior is you can throw it in the mud leave it there for a while , pick it up and it will still fire .
One more thing if you buy ammo goto ammunitionstore.com buy the wolf ammo for about 100 bucks for 1000 rounds . Stay away from the more well known ammo it tends to be way over hyped for performance . And stay away from surplus crap , you'll be jamming every 5th round , it's junk .

so does that mean once you purchase it you can make it an auto if you want?Originally posted by Berserker

I don't have a flash suppresor , it is illegal in our state to put one on , you can buy them on and that is legal you just can't install .
The shotgun is great for home defense I agree , I just picked up a russian made shotgun , magazine fed . I never saw one of those before so it should be a good add to my others .
Oh one last thing , if you go shooting load your magazines 2 rounds short in them all so the tension spring stays good . People that load them as full as they can tend to get jams because the spring loses it's spring . When you are talking 30 rds compared to 28 who cares since you can reload the AR so fast ... seriously wait till you try it .

One thing to think about, lots of people make AR-15 variants, like Bushmaster, Olympic Arms, and several others that are all good quality. I'd check them out as well as the Colt.
I can pick up a Colt AR here for about 8-900 brand new.
Be careful playing with the full-auto stuff, too; its doubtful you could get hold of it, but its not terribly hard to modify it if you have half a clue how to. It carries major Federal jail time in either case.

It's just for fun, to shoot not to hunt. Home defense would be a last resort for the gun, even so if anyone breaks into my house I don't plan on going looking for them, I'll hide and let them come to me-so I'm not worried about length. I like the looks of the AR way better than the AK anyways, I'm fine with the smaller round as well. Thanks for the input!Originally posted by Berserker

I agree with powerman , don't make yours fully auto it's not worth it . The only time I'd make mine fully auto is if the US becomes a police state or something .
If you can buy a colt new for 800 to 900 bucks buy it , but check the bolt , a favorite trick of some is to sell you a colt cheap then you later see that it has bushmaster bolt in a colt reciever .
Give me your broken , give me your beaten ... I will build them up , I will lead them ... to the threshhold . Make you stronger , make you believe .
One thing you must keep in mind about the AK:It is very heavy. Also, it is so durable because of the design of its bolt. The bolt is very heavy and is designed to slam with force against the rear of the gun, which proves to give quite a hefty recoil, yet serves to clear the bolt and slide of any debris there may be in there.
Remember this though- you WONT throw your AK in the mud. Russian or Iraqi troops may have to. You will clean your gun after you fire it, whereas it was designed basically to be used as the main arm in an otherwise poorly equipped military. You will keep far better care of your AK than was ever meant to be given it.
You are not going to be humping through the jungle with your M-16. It isnt going to get dust and dirt in the barrel, you're not going to dig the barrel into the dirt when you're diving from a grenade. Your M-16 will be kept in excellent condition, clean, free of contaminants. It will shoot on mark every time because you're not in a warzone.
BTW- the .223 round may be illegal for hunting in your area. Check local game hunting regulations.

excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise, dreaming more than others think is practical, and expecting more than others think is possible.
