My mate is a fitness manager for LA Fitness in Bury St Edmunds and he says it’s a nice gym. I went to one near me once and it seemed a nice place. Never been to fitness first though.

I think I went to a fitness first in runcorn, it was pretty cool. As with all big gyms, they have a HUGE cardio area, but the upstairs in this one was dedicated to machine and free weights, so it was pretty cool.

I know you said the UK, but I used to workout at an LA Fitness here in Atlanta, GA. The facilities were OK and the equipment was OK. It was all converted to an LA Fitness from an Old Australian Bodyworks from a long while back so that explains the aging facilities and equipment. They are building a new facility down the street with all new equipment to replace it. I left LA Fitness because the current management were all a bunch of ****ing ****heads. They didn't know anything about fitness/nutrition/athleticism and they didn't give a **** about the customers. The manager that signed me up was awesome I will say, but he left for some reason or another. I doubt all LA Fitnesses have the same managerial problem but just be on the lookout. Also American custome support hotline isn't all that great either. Hope this helps some.

I actually joined LA Fitness last week after working out at home for the last 8 years, I think everything is OK there but my only gripe is the dumbells only go up to 36KG (79lb) which I think is way too light. Although they may have heavier ones at other outlets. They have a lot of cardio equipment and a combination of machines and free weights, barbells , Smith machine, squat rack etc, so apart from the dumbells it's definately worth a look. . I haven't been to fitness first. But I would recommend you have a look round all the gyms in your area before you make up your mind one way or the other, most places are only too happy to show you round. This should make your decision easier.

    I hope this helps.
