If it is the worm, then do the following. Go to start, then at the “run” box type SERVICES.MSC and click OK. Then go to Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and double click on it. Under the Recovery tab make sure that all three responses say “take no action”. If it says that “reboot the computer” then it was definitely changed by the worm. If that does not help please try to post additional details.

When it restarts does it shut down instantly, like black screen? If so it could be your memory or motherboard. Really hard to say tho.

People wonder why I call myself Mr. T. One dude asked, 'does the T stand for tough?' I said no. Another dude asked if the T stands for my last name, Tureaud. No it does not. The 'T' in Mr. T stands for tuna. T loves tuna.

Get some new or at least reliable memory and replace your own with it for a while and see if the random restarts continue.

Again, it's still hard to say why this is happening. You might also have some weird settings in your bios. Or it could just be a f*cked up Windows install. Sometimes reinstalling Windows is the only way to fix something.

I had that problem; it was overheating problems. Happens when I ran games and 3d studio max. So I removed all the panels and moved the computer. I also changed the reboot value thingie in bios.

I would not go ahead and get memory just yet. Sometimes driver or software issues cause this to happen. Most of the time it can be video card drivers. When your computer restarts you might receive an error message that your PC just recovered from a serious problem. Please try and include as much detail so that we can determine how to help you. Sometimes the smallest things which you think is irrelevant can determine the cause.

If you think the computer might be overheating, then your BIOS will indicate the temperature and also has a feature that will give you and beep when it overheats. If you are using your computer and hear the emergency beeps then you know it is overheating. Also there is software that you can load that will show you the temperature in Windows.

In order to better determine if it is a driver issue I would boot up in safe mode. This allows the PC to boot with minimal drivers. If it does not shut down then this will give you an idea of whether it may be more of a software then hardware issue.

Haven't ran the patch, I can't, mircosoft won't let me. I'll let you be the judge as to why they won't let me download from windows update.

Is there anything in particular that you are doing when it restarts?

Roid, I know what you are talking about. You are aware that there is a version of you know what out there with SP1 included in addition to keygens that will generate legitimate keys so you can install SP1 on you know what.

Going on Aido’s advice about the ram, I would also mess around with the sticks. Maybe use only one stick and try them on different slots. Also, I am interested in knowing if you PC runs fine if you boot up in safe mode with networking. You can also try to use the repair console or reload Windows.

Lastly, although I am sure you can find a solution and I hate to tell you this, I would do a format and clean install. We geeks look for any opportunity to reformat but regular peeps find it hard and very annoying. I am only recommending because it is hard to diagnose the exact problem based on the info you can provide and the fact that you were infected with a virus. Think of it as a new beginning. Also, even if you find a solution, the amount of time it will take you may be more then what it takes to install Windows. Just make sure that when you back up your current data that you scan it for virus.
