Anyone here mountain bike? Need advice.

I've been tooling around on my old mountain bike for the past week or so trying to get into better shape for dirtbike racing and surprisingly I've been having a blast.

Right now I'm riding a Head hard rock. It's a 400 dollar Sportmart special. Weighs about 40 lbs etc etc. I want to upgrade to something better. I'll be buying used and hoping to spend about 1000 bucks.

I don't know what kind of bike to get though. I think I would like single track riding. I don't know what they call this. I think it might be cross-country but then I've heard that XC is mostly uphill. What do they call just normal trail riding with things like log rides etc. I'm obviously not interested in riding or taking a ski-lift to the top and riding purely downhill. I like variation.

    What do you guys suggest?

There are some really good bike makers out there. Personally, I'm partial to Cannondale b/c I like their oversized tubing, however their suspension tends to be a little bit different from the norm. You also can't go wrong with a trek thats also a very good bike. I also think Diamondback has some decent ones, but not to sure. Try to get something a lot lighter too... 40 lbs, damn is it made of STEEL??
