Just wondering if consuming more than twice your bodyweight in protein can be harmful. Thanks!
Not harmful unless you have a pre-existing kidney condition.
However, probably wasteful. Gram for gram, protein isn't the cheapest way to feed yourself and 2x bodyweight is probably overkill.

yeah I'd say eating twice your bodyweight in protein will do some harm.
I'd imagine the first thing that would happen is your stomach would explode.

The reason I ask is I have this high protein/calorie drink that I got from a book and it says I should drink the whole thing in one day. I totaled up the nutrients when I made it and it has 3470cal 228pro 312carbs and 96grams of fat and makes about 10 servings. So drinking the whole thing in one day is not hard.
But if I drink this ontop of my regular eating I will probably be getting at least 300 grams of protein and over 4000 calories.
I only weigh 155 lbs.
Anyway. The book I am reading, John McCallum's "the complete Keys to Progress", says that you should consume one to one and a half grams of protein of the amount that you want to weigh.
So if I wanted to weigh 200 lbs, it says I should eat 300 to 400 grams of protein.
But if I consume this much stuff wont I put on a lot of fat?
What do you guys think? Thanks
I think you'll be one gassy, constipated mofo.
anytime you eat more cals then maintenance you run the risk of getting fat.....

Tryska is right, eating excess will make you fat NOT musclar.
I want to be 350 pounds so if Im to follow this guys advice I need to eat .... 525+ grams of protein. This guy sounds like a moron.
Also, get protein from real food.

But apart from the risk of getting fat you can put on muscle mass.Eitherway you can't.Originally posted by Tryska

Eating excess will make you fat if you don't workout. If you do workout, you'll put on both fat and muscles.

Blackalpha is right, but you need to be aware that you can't force feed muscle growth elmo. You need to find the optimum.

Certainly.
The most difficult and important factor is to adjust the macros and the level of consumed calories so that they will be optimal for muscle gain with the minimal fat gain at the same time.
I want to add one more thing here that has to do with the question that elmo posed.
A high protein diet causes elevated uric acid levels. When uric acid collects in excess in the joints,it causes inflammation and gout.
Recently, elevated uric acid has been found to be a strong indicator of heart disease risk.
So,you have one more proof that too much protein can be harmful.
Blackalpha,
The issue of Uric acid buildup would be counteracted by drinking lots of water would it not?
When you have high uric acid levels, drinking lots of water is not enough.
You need more vitamin A, vitamins B1, B2, B6 and pantothenic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E,calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium(especially) etc.
Then you should avoid offal foods such as liver, kidneys, tripe, sweetbreads and tongue, excessive amounts of red meat, shellfish, fish roe and scallops, peas, lentils and beans and alcohol.
offal= awful
yuk!
gout ...... ouch not nice. I've had it.
